Erwin Engeler, a pioneer of computer science at ETH Zürich, passed away on 28 July 2026 at the age of 96.

He joined the then Computer Science Group at ETH Zurich as a Full Professor in 1972. In this role, he played a pivotal part in establishing our discipline at ETH.

In 1973, he submitted a proposal to the school board on behalf of the group to formally transform it into the Institute of Computer Science.

With the establishment of the institute, the term ‘computer science’ was officially adopted at ETH Zurich.

🎉 Congratulations to Professors Peter Müller and Zhendong Su, and Professor Emeritus Bertrand Meyer on being elected to the inaugural ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Academy!

They are among 80 individuals worldwide recognised for their lasting contributions to software engineering through research, practice and teaching. Their election highlights the impact of their work across programming languages, software engineering, compilers, computer security and the development of reliable, high-quality software systems.

The inaugural class was announced as part of ACM SIGSOFT's 50th anniversary celebrations at FSE 2026 in Montreal.

Congratulations to Professor David Basin, Professor Cas Cremers, Dr Benedikt Schmidt and Dr Simon Meier on receiving a Test-of-Time Award at the IEEE Computer Security Foundations Symposium (CSF'26)! 🎉

Their 2012 paper has had a lasting impact on the formal verification of cryptographic protocols, laying the foundations for advances that continue to shape security research today. The award recognises work of outstanding and enduring significance – and this year, their paper was selected as one of only two honoured from the 659 papers published at CSF(W) up to 2026.

We are delighted to share that Professor Ana Klimovic and Professor Siyu Tang have been promoted to Associate Professors of Computer Science at ETH Zürich. 🎉

Professor Ana Klimovic is advancing the future of cloud and AI infrastructure by developing more efficient and user-friendly systems and architectures. Her work, including the “Dandelion” project, is helping shape the next generation of computing.

Professor Siyu Tang has earned international recognition for her pioneering research on human motion estimation, avatar creation and motion synthesis. Her work is driving new possibilities in augmented reality, robotics and digital humans.

These promotions recognise two exceptional researchers whose work is pushing the boundaries of computer science and creating real-world impact.

A well-deserved recognition for outstanding research: Professor Peter Müller has received the 2026 AITO Dahl-Nygaard Senior Prize, one of the field's highest international honours.

The prize celebrates his long-term contributions to software verification and the development of practical verification tools that help developers build more reliable and secure software. It also recognises his leadership and lasting impact on the programming languages and formal methods community.

The future of computer science education is currently the subject of heated debate.

This was made evident at the 15th Swiss Day for Computer Science Education (STIU). The event took place on 19 June 2026 at ETH Zürich, alongside the Swiss final of the Informatikbiber competition. 🖥️ 🧒

This year's STIU comprised eleven workshops covering a wide range of computer science education topics, including cryptology, artificial neural networks, robotics and teaching methods. 🧩 🤖 👨‍🏫

The event demonstrated once again the vibrancy and diversity of the discussion surrounding computer science education. 👏

Congratulations to ETH Zürich Professor Torsten Hoefler on receiving an European Research Council Proof of Concept Grant! 🎉

Building on his ERC-funded research, the grant will support the next steps in bringing research on high-performance and scalable computing closer to practical applications.

The project, DaCeGPT, combines AI with the DaCe programming framework to make advanced performance optimisation more accessible to researchers and developers. By helping translate frontier research into real-world impact, the ERC Proof of Concept programme supports the journey from scientific discovery to innovation.

At the end of May, the Game Lab at ETH Zürich celebrated its 20th final presentation. Students build fully playable video games from scratch in just 14 weeks, turning ideas into complete, technically ambitious game projects.

What started in 2007 as a vision by Bob Sumner and Markus Gross has become a signature course in the computer science curriculum: teams of students not only design games, but also build much of the underlying technology from scratch.

Over the years, the Game Lab has also helped launch real-world success stories, including the game Unrailed, later developed into a commercial spin-off by Indoor Astronauts. Two decades in, the idea remains the same: video games are where art and computer science meet.
