Huge congratulations, Massimo!

Massimo's MA project Current's Wanderers has won the Förderpreis Design 2026. This is the third year in a row that the prize goes our MA Interaction Design programme – an extraordinary streak, and we are immensely proud of his achievement.

Current's Wanderers invites us into a world most of us never notice. Using water as a physical and conceptual bridge, the installation lets visitors observe, listen to, touch and move alongside real-time plankton – drawn from a microscopic portion of Lake Greifensee – through the very currents that carry them.

The project stands out for developing genuinely novel more-than-human design methods, showing both the plankton and the scientists who study them in a new light. It builds empathy towards living beings most of us overlook, and translates into design the care scientists hold for these tiny communities – a reminder that science offers more than data and facts alone.

«Deadline» explores how administrative communication after a death can be redesigned through service design. The project proposes a citizen-orientated support service that reduces fragmentation, clarifies responsibilities and supports bereaved people during complex administrative processes.

Usability issues in industrial control interfaces increase error risk for plant operators. «Flowra» applies AI to help automation engineers identify and address these issues before deployment. It analyses Human-Machine Interface projects against industry standards and generates recommendations for readable, consistent and error-resistant interfaces.

For centuries, debate has been a central tool of Tibetan monastic education. Knowledge is examined, questioned and deepened through argumentation. «The Art of Reasoning» transfers this practice into an app, developed in co-design with Tibetan scholars, as a contribution to the preservation of an endangered cultural practice.

What does it actually mean to shop ethically?

This interactive installation takes the EU Digital Product Passport as its starting point and examines the gap between transparency tools and reality. Guided by an AI assistant, visitors explore a supply chain map that reveals what labels disclose, what they omit, and what no system can trace.
It challenges the idea that ethical shopping is about personal choice — confronting structural complexity rather than individual guilt.
