Für alle Gamer:innen: In der Scientifica Vorwoche haben wir einen Raum voller neuer Games im Minikosmos der Zürcher Gaming Industrie für Sie.

🎮 Gemeinsam mit dem Swiss Game Hub und der UZH DSI Community Gaming lädt die Wirtschaftsförderung der Stadt Zürich zu einem Abend ein, an dem Games zeigen, was sie jenseits von Entertainment können: Wissen vermitteln, Forschung übersetzen, Training verbessern und komplexe Themen plötzlich greifbar machen.

Zum Warm-up gibt es kurze Lightning Talks mit überraschenden Einblicken aus Gaming und Wissenschaft. Danach gehört der Abend den Prototypen: Games anspielen, mit Entwicklern sprechen, Ideen challengen und entdecken, was als Nächstes spielbar wird.

Das Wissenschaftsfestival Scientifica wird gemeinsam von der UZH und der ETH Zürich in Partnerschaft mit der Stadt Zürich und dem Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich organisiert. Es findet vom 22. bis 30. August in und um Zürich statt.

Why have we become so complacent about the rule of law? Democracy and the rule of law are gradually being eroded, warns Helen Keller, a professor at UZH and former judge at the European Court of Human Rights.

One reason: We may have failed to explain clearly enough why the rule of law matters and what happens when legal protections are weakened.

⚖️ Keller sees pressure on democracy from several directions: declining respect for laws, threats to independent journalism and political institutions that struggle to uphold constitutional limits. Courts can provide important safeguards, but they cannot replace a political culture committed to democratic principles.

Civil society therefore matters. “Democracy depends on people getting involved and speaking out about injustices.” For lasting change, however, civic engagement must also find its way into parties, institutions, NGOs and political processes.

🎭 Discover Dada in the heart of Zurich during Scientifica’s pre-festival program:

The Dada Trail invites visitors of all ages to discover the language experiments that took place in 1916 at the historic Cabaret Voltaire and that later inspired countless new artistic developments. You can experiment with language just like the Dadaists or adopt the perspective of researchers: What do sound poems sound like? What are all the things you can do with individual letters?

The Dada Trail includes free admission to the exhibition «DadaBetweenLanguages», presented in the vaulted cellar of Cabaret Voltaire.

Dada and Cabaret Voltaire are a significant part of Zurich’s city history with international relevance. Discover how the ideas of one of the most influential avant-garde movements of the twentieth century continue to resonate today.

The science festival Scientifica is co-organized by UZH and ETH Zurich in partnership with the City of Zurich and Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich. It takes place from 22 to 30 August in and around Zurich.

🌍 Twenty years ago, many believed social media would democratize conversations about climate change by giving more people a voice and creating a direct link between science and the public.

A new review by researchers from the University of Zurich and the University of Münster shows that this promise has only been partially fulfilled.

📱 While more voices are now part of the conversation, established political actors, governments and news organizations still dominate. At the same time, climate-change skeptics have gained visibility. The researchers also suggest that future divisions may increasingly emerge between platforms rather than within them, making shared public debate more difficult.

🔎 The review also highlights growing challenges for climate journalism and shows that there is no single "social media effect." The influence of social media depends on the platform, regulations and local context.
