Last week we celebrated the 11th birthday of our school with typical Russian food and drinks. In the next post, we will share the necessary Russian vocabulary for parties and celebrations.

На прошлой неделе мы отметили 11-й день рождения школы с традиционной русской едой и напитками. В следующем посте мы поделимся словами и выражениями, необходимыми для всевозможных праздников в и вечеринок.

In November, many mornings start with fog. Туман [tuman] is surprisingly a word which has come to Russia from the South: it’s of Proto-Turkic origin (Proto-Turkic is the common ancestor of Turkic languages).

Every Russian speaking person knows the Soviet cartoon “Ёжик в тумане” (Hedgehog in the Fog). It’s a lyrical and melancholic animated story about a tiny hedgehog who gets lost on his way to a friend’s house and sees a white horse in the heavy fog. Of course, his dear friend is a bear.

November is almost over. However, it’s never too late to start talking about rain.

On this day, 200 years ago, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, one of the greatest writers and thinkers in the history of Russian and world literature, was born. His books are the reason why many people want to learn Russian. Surely, it’s a long journey, from mastering the alphabet until being able to read Dostoyevsky’s novels, but what a marvellous journey it is!

What is your favourite Dostoyevsky’s novel? And why did you start learning Russian?

В этот день 200 лет назад родился Фёдор Михайлович Достоевский, один из величайших писателей и мыслителей. Возможность читать Достоевского в оригинале – это одна из причин, почему многие люди во всём мире хотят изучать русский язык. Конечно же, путь от изучения алфавита до чтения Достоевского долог, но зато так интересен!
