In Pursuit of Luxury

Two thought leaders. Two very different ways of seeing luxury.

On September 10 at IPOL 2026 we welcome Dr Brett Staniland, whose work exposes the fashion supply chain and asks what transparency really means, and Sam Bompas of Bompas & Parr, who builds spectacle and sensory experience into something you can taste, touch and remember.

One interrogates the claims. The other reimagines the experience. Both will address the same question. What is luxury?

London has been above thirty degrees on and off for six weeks. We've had earthquakes aroundtheworld. We've had trains derailing. Yesterday, a government alert landed on every phone in London telling us not to light a fire, not to use a disposable barbecue.

And the industry with the most influence, fashion, appears to be ignoring it. Companies are still producing from materials typically made from fossil fuels, a plasticised canvas bag here, a polyester garment there, shipped around the world in plastic. I'm not really seeing many people saying anything.

It's time we did. Time we told people to buy less, and to understand what they do buy: the materials used, the supply chain, the environment a product sits within, and the long term environmental damage these things cause.

I'm not claiming to have the answers. What I am saying is that we need the conversation and we need to take responsibility for communicating where the damage is being done, why and how.

That's where luxury becomes relevant, not as a five thousand dollar dress, but to better understanding the supply chain behind it.
