RECAP GRUPPENAUSSTELLUNG INTO an den ZURICH DESIGN WEEKS.

Das Departement Design nahm mit einer Gruppenausstellung an der 5. Ausgabe der Zurich Design Weeks teil. Die Ausstellung «into – Gemeinsamkeit gestalten» zeigte Arbeiten junger Designer:innen, die neue Perspektiven auf das Zusammenleben in unserer komplexen Gegenwart eröffnen und präsentierte diese in Führungen und anderen publikumswirksamen Formaten einer breiten, internationalen Öffentlichkeit.

Wir danken allen Beteiligten für das grosse Engagement und den Zurich Design Weeks für die spannende Kooperationsmöglichkeit.

REFRESH x PUNCH PRIZE 2026 — Exhibition Recap
_

For the third time already, the «REFRESH X Punch Prize» has been awarded to outstanding diploma projects of the Department of Design that innovatively deal with questions around ecological sustainability, the climate crisis and the complex entanglements between society, the environment and technology. The winning projects have been on show as part of Swissnex Boston and Swissnex New York’s initiative at the Assembly of the Climate Week in New York in September 2026.

After thorough consideration, the jury – Maike Thies (Co-Head and Curator REFRESH Festival) and Marc Streit (Head of Arts & Creative Industries, Swissnex in Boston & New York) – have decided in favour of the following winning projects.

«Design Realities – Future Technologies» is the theme of the current edition of the interdisciplinary lecture series KEIN KINO. Depending on the event, the lecture takes place at the Kino Toni or via Zoom and addresses an interdisciplinary audience. The series‘ focus is the discussion of projects at the intersection of Arts – Design – Technology. The guests share their design processes and theoretical foundation on a project-by-project basis and invite an open discussion. The lecture series deals with pressing topics from game design, video art, social media, immersive arts, dance, theatre and composition for film and new media. The goal is to examine trends critically and identify productive collaborations between disciplines.

Let’s Talk: «Big Players» with AATB
REFRESH x Fantoche

This year’s talk at REFRESH x Fantoche with the title «Big Players» will take place on Saturday, 5 September 2026, from 2–3 pm.

Between enthusiasm and the «Uncanny Valley»: the duo Andrea Anner and Thibault Brevet take industrial automation far beyond the confines of factory logic, transforming robotic arms into performers, participants and, at times, eerie companions. In their installations, the artist duo impressively highlights the fragile networks of relationships and complex social interactions that emerge from the gradual integration of robots into our everyday lives.

REFRESH x Fantoche, running from September 2 to 6, 2026, is a exhibition exploring the intersection of Arts, Design & Technology. The 5th edition of REFRESH x Fantoche is a longterm partnership between the Department of Design and the Immersive Arts Space of the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), and the International Animation Film Festival Fantoche.
The exhibition will feature 17 projects of international artists and alumni of the Department of Design of Zurich University of the Arts to envision possible futures and new fields of action for design and the arts. REFRESH x Fantoche 2026 will focus on «Ways into Being», reflecting the impact of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence on society and the planetary well-being. The line up highlights the crucial role of creative practitioners and thinkers engaging critically and responsibly with digital transformation. In guided tours and a public talk visitors can deepen their expertise in the field and are able to engage with the various artists and talents.

Im Rahmen der Diplomfeier Design 2026 wurden je eine Arbeit aus dem BA und MA Major Design mit dem Förderpreis Design ausgezeichnet. Das Preisgeld ist mit CHF 5’000 dotiert. Die Förderpreise zeichnen herausragende Diplomarbeiten aus, die die jeweilige Disziplin um Perspektiven bereichern und auf innovative Weise zu neuen Diskursführungen anregen. In 2026 standen 20 Diplomarbeiten aus den sieben Fachrichtungen für den Förderpreis Design im Wettbewerb. Eine Jury – bestehend aus international renommierten Designschaffenden – entscheidet über die preistragenden Personen.

Alle nominierten Arbeiten werden ab Ende September 2026 auf der Plattform Showcase Design umfassend vorgestellt.

Die internationale Expert:immensity entschied sich nach eingehender Beratung für die beiden Gewinner:innenprojekte aus BA und MA Major. Im Bachelor wurden zudem zwei Projekte mit «Honorable Mentions» bedacht.
