🌾🇨🇭 Swiss agriculture is facing one of its toughest summers in recent years.
The severe drought affecting Switzerland is forcing many farmers to bring their livestock down from Alpine pastures weeks earlier than usual. The consequences are already being felt:
🐄 Reduced grazing time in the Alps 🧀 Lower production of iconic alpine cheeses, with Gruyère d’Alpage expected to decline by around 10% compared with last year 🌱 Less available fodder in the lowlands, putting additional pressure on livestock farmers
These challenges highlight the growing impact of climate change on agriculture and the urgent need to strengthen the resilience of our farming systems.
At the same time, Switzerland continues to invest in the future. The inauguration of Agroscope’s new research laboratories in Posieux marks an important milestone for agricultural innovation, helping develop solutions that will enable farmers to adapt to changing environmental conditions while ensuring sustainable food production.
Swiss agriculture has always evolved through innovation, collaboration and resilience. Today’s challenges remind us why research, technology and knowledge transfer have never been more important.

🌾📍 Produire au bon endroit, avec les bonnes cultures : une des clés de l’agriculture de demain !

Une étude publiée dans Agrarforschung Schweiz montre qu’une meilleure adaptation des cultures aux conditions locales permet de concilier productivité, résilience et préservation des ressources naturelles. 🌱💧

Face au changement climatique, miser sur les spécificités de chaque région pourrait renforcer durablement notre sécurité alimentaire.

When we think about farming, we often think about tractors, fields or production.

But agriculture is also about people.

Across Switzerland, women are helping shape agriculture every day — often quietly, often behind the scenes.

🌱 What would agriculture look like with more women in leadership?

According to the FAO, reducing gender inequalities in agriculture can improve food security, productivity and climate resilience.

In Switzerland, more women are becoming visible in:
🌿 organic farming
💡 agricultural innovation
🛒 short supply chains
🌍 sustainable food systems
🤝 community-supported agriculture

And yet, access to land, financing and leadership opportunities remains unequal.

The International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026 is not only about recognition. It is about creating the conditions for future generations of women to lead, innovate and shape agriculture differently.

Because resilient agriculture needs diversity of perspectives.

👩‍🌾 More than farmers: the many hats worn by women in Swiss agriculture 🇨🇭

On many farms, women are not only working the land.

They are also:
📦 managing logistics
🧾 handling administration
🛒 running farm shops
📱 communicating on social media
🌱 developing sustainable projects
👨‍👩‍👧 caring for families
🤝 building direct relationships with consumers

Research shows that many women in Swiss agriculture also work outside the farm to support household income.

Today’s agriculture is evolving — and women are often at the centre of diversification, innovation and local food systems.

The image of farming is changing. And so is the role of women within it.

🌾 The future of agriculture is not only about production. It is also about connection, resilience and community.

🌾 2026: International Year of the Woman Farmer 🇨🇭

Behind Switzerland’s landscapes, local food and family farms are thousands of women helping keep agriculture alive every single day.

Did you know that around 40,000 women work on Swiss farms? Yet almost half work without pay, and only around 7% of Swiss farms are officially managed by women.

Women have always been part of agriculture — in the fields, in administration, in direct sales, in innovation and in family life. But too often, their contribution remains invisible.

The International Year of the Woman Farmer is an opportunity to recognise the essential role women play in building resilient food systems and sustaining rural communities.

🌱 Because supporting women in agriculture means supporting the future of food.

🌱 L’agriculture suisse explore de nouvelles cultures pour préparer l’avenir
Face aux défis climatiques, économiques et alimentaires, l’Union suisse des paysans (USP) (.suisse.des.paysans)lance une nouvelle dynamique : tester des cultures alternatives afin de renforcer la résilience et la compétitivité de l’agriculture suisse.

🌾 Diversifier pour s’adapter

Dans un contexte marqué par le changement climatique, la pression sur les ressources et l’évolution des habitudes alimentaires, l’USP explore des cultures encore peu répandues en Suisse. L’objectif : identifier des alternatives viables aux productions traditionnelles, capables de mieux résister aux conditions climatiques et de répondre aux attentes du marché.

Parmi les pistes étudiées figurent notamment des cultures riches en protéines végétales ou adaptées à des conditions plus sèches. Cette diversification pourrait offrir de nouvelles opportunités économiques aux agriculteurs tout en réduisant la dépendance aux importations.

🔬 Des essais concrets sur le terrain

Ces nouvelles cultures ne restent pas au stade théorique : elles sont testées directement dans les exploitations agricoles suisses. Les résultats permettront d’évaluer leur rendement, leur adaptation aux sols et leur potentiel commercial.

L’approche se veut pragmatique et collaborative, en impliquant les agriculteurs, les acteurs de la filière et les experts. L’objectif est clair : fournir des données concrètes pour orienter les décisions futures.

🌍 Un enjeu stratégique pour la souveraineté alimentaire

En développant des cultures innovantes, la Suisse cherche à renforcer sa souveraineté alimentaire et à anticiper les mutations du secteur. Cette initiative s’inscrit dans une vision à long terme : construire une agriculture plus durable, résiliente et alignée avec les défis de demain.
