I Have A Question: The ramblings and forays into explanations of the quirks of English grammar and vocabulary, as well as the pseudo-philosophical ... thrown in. And a few hundred sidetracks. 30/03/2025

I Have a Question.

Philosophy? Linguistics? Autobiography? Comedy? Etymology?
Ever tried fitting everything about your book into a neat little Amazon category?

That was my first challenge when publishing ‘I Have a Question.’ Turns out, a book that dances across philosophy, linguistics, grammar quirks, etymology, and my musings about life fits ... nowhere.
After much head-scratching, it finally landed in the spectacularly specific niche of: Education & Teaching → Teacher Resources → Education Theory → Contemporary Methods → Language Experience Approach. Yep, not exactly bestseller territory—but who’s counting?

So what’s this book all about?

- It’s a light-hearted compilation of my adventures as a teacher of English as a foreign language. Inside, you’ll find:

- A playful exploration of grammar points (trust me, grammar can be fun).

- Fascinating etymological dives into words you thought you knew.

- Sharp commentary on the use, misuse, and downright abuse of English in our modern world.

- Philosophical detours that might make you ponder life - or question my sanity.

- Random musings that may or may not interest anyone - but hey, they interested me enough to write them down!

Whether you’re a teacher looking for fresh insights, a lover of language history, or someone who just enjoys a laugh at English’s seemingly illogical quirks, ‘I Have a Question’ is sure to give you plenty to think about (and smile about).

So go ahead - give it a try! It might even land on your niche bookshelf.

Crossword Puzzles for Advanced Learners of English - Teacher's Book: Communicative puzzles with additional follow-up revision exercises and conversation topics 22/03/2025

🟦 Why Crossword Puzzles Are Game-Changers for Language Learning 🟦

Crossword puzzles don't just have entertainment value, they also harness the power of science to revolutionise English learning! Here's how they work their magic:

✅ Vocabulary Expansion: They introduce new words and reinforce existing ones, fostering better retention through retrieval practice, a proven technique for long-term learning (Roediger & Butler, 2011).

☑️ Spelling Mastery: Solving crosswords demands precise spelling, sharpening learners' accuracy while making vocabulary stick.

✅ Contextual Learning: Words aren't isolated - they're embedded in meaningful contexts via clues, aiding comprehension and usage (Nation, 2001).

☑️ Grammar Awareness: Puzzles incorporate grammatical hints, such as parts of speech or word forms, subtly reinforcing grammar rules alongside vocabulary growth.

✅ Cognitive Efficiency: Reducing extraneous cognitive load, crossword puzzles let learners focus entirely on lexical acquisition (Sweller, 1988).

☑️ Memory Boost: Recalling and connecting vocabulary during puzzles strengthens memory networks, enhancing retention (Carpenter & Olson, 2012).

✅ Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving: Crossword puzzles challenge learners' reasoning and problem-solving skills, keeping minds sharp.

☑️ Motivation through Play: Studies show that gamified learning activities such as crosswords increase engagement and enjoyment, fuelling persistence (Basol & Balgalmis, 2016).

✅ Social Connection: Group-solving encourages collaboration and communication in English, fostering confidence and interaction.

Elevate your teaching with these new books! To bring these scientifically proven benefits to life, I'm very pleased to introduce:

wds Launches Series of Educational Apps

The language school wds, based in Winterthur, Switzerland, has launched a series of educational games aimed at learners of English and native speakers. The apps include ‘Words’, a fun and educational game in which players form words from sets of letters which are all taken from thousands of car registration plates from around the world. Words are formed using the letters shown, in the same order. Players can play individually or against other players/teams. The second app launched is ‘Link-Up’, there are two versions available, one for learners of English and one at native speaker level, in this challenging game, players have to enter two letters which complete one word shown and which also begin another word, also displayed. The game can be played by one player only, in 'Individual Mode' or against other players or teams, in 'Competition Mode'. The database contains over 6,000 word combinations. The final app is called ‘Countdown’, in this game, a word is represented by dashes, corresponding to the number of letters in the word, players have to guess the word by entering letters, they win if they can complete the word in less than 10 wrong attempts. Words can be selected from various topics, or, more demanding, can call up a random word from the database currently containing 2,500 words. Here also, users can play on their own or against other players/teams.
