Our older pupils have been buzzing with excitement as they work towards writing their own fantasy stories in the lead-up to our half-term break

Since Christmas, the reading part of our lessons has focused on exploring fantasy texts and really getting to grips with their structurea nd features. We’ve supported this with sequencing cards, fantasy word banks, and clear planning sheets, alongside lots of rich discussion with peers. We can't wait to see their final versions.

And what about our older students? Have they been so busy that they haven’t had time to enjoy some Christmas activities? Not at all, and the development of their reading and writing skills has certainly not been compromised.

Over the past few weeks, they have taken part in guided group reading with festive books, written paragraphs about how Christmas is celebrated in their households, composed letters to Father Christmas, completed Christmas spelling crosswords, created interesting Christmas and elf stories using a range of prompts, and written winter-themed play scripts, which they then performed for the rest of the group with videos being sent to their parents.

It’s been a wonderfully busy period, and we teachers have thoroughly enjoyed sharing in the children’s natural excitement at this special time.

And here’s the final craft in the series from our younger learners. They enjoyed creating these beautiful metallic snowflakes while developing their fine motor skills, dexterity, listening skills . I think they are perfect for adding a festive touch to any table or tree this winter.

We're having a busy festive time! During December, our younger learners have been making Christmas crafts each week. So far they have made baubles from cupcake cases and scratch art bookmarks. The children really love making the crafts but it also has numerous benefits including development of instructional language, following instructions, fine motor skills and much more. Their pride and joy in what they have produced is wonderful to see. More craft next week!

We have some tiny visitors in tiny houses in both the Wädenswil and Erlenmoos classrooms. The houses have really captured the pupils’ imaginations, and they have produced a number of written pieces such as drawings and descriptive writing about who or what might live there, with suggestions ranging from elves and mice to monsters, penguins and Father Christmas.

This week, some of the children wrote a letter to the occupant of the tiny house, asking a variety of questions to help them find out more about who might be living there. Next week, the inquiry continues...

We are incredibly proud of Grace, whom we have taught for the past eight years. Growing up in an English-speaking family, she dreamed of becoming a writer from a very early age. At just six years old, she was already writing and illustrating little books she made herself.
After completing Swiss primary school, Grace joined an International School and is thriving with the new opportunities to write creatively. Her mother shared a piece of persuasive writing she completed in class. We were delighted with the letter - it not only showcases a clear structure and well-argued points but also her unique voice, rich vocabulary, and exciting ideas.

In the 4th and 5th classes, our students have been exploring non-chronological reports about animals. After studying examples and learning their key features, it was time for them to write their own!

To add a creative twist, they were tasked with inventing a magical animal. With vocabulary lists to help expand their language and writing frames to organise the content, they embraced the challenge with enthusiasm.

Here are some photos of the students in action and the impressive reports they presented to their classmates. It was a fun and rewarding experience, and we're so proud of their fantastic results.

🎃 Spooky Halloween Book Club! 🎃

What a magical evening! We read and discussed our Halloween story by candlelight - the perfect spooky setting!​

We loved this clever twist on two classic fairy tales, beautifully illustrated by the amazing Chris Riddell. The children gave fantastic presentations, walked like the eerie “sleepers,” compared the story with traditional fairy rhymes, and debated whether the main character was right to leave her engagement and marriage behind to help others in nearby lands.

Such imagination, lively discussion, and lots of Halloween fun!

We’re so excited for the year ahead! Our new groups are ready to get started, and we can’t wait to welcome all our students – both familiar faces and new friends – next week.

We hope everyone has had a wonderful summer full of adventures, stories, and happy memories. Now it’s time to bring that energy into the classroom and start learning together.
