Year 1 🐝 Meet Clever Cat 👋😺

Hundreds of thousands of children in thousands of schools have discovered reading and writing through LETTERLAND.

Each Letterland Storybook tells a story about one or more of the Letterland characters.

In this lively adventure, Clever Cat helps a confused clown find his way back to the circus. With its playful story, colourful illustrations and lots of 'c' sounds, the book makes phonics and early reading so much fun.

This is a funny story of a dad who accidentally gets his head stuck in park railings while showing his son what NOT to do. As more people try - and fail - to help, the situation becomes increasingly chaotic until he is finally freed.

It highlights and teaches children that even adults make mistakes and that problems can sometimes take many attempts to solve.

Children learn best when they start with a question!

Instead of saying "Let's learn facts about polar bears," the 'I Wonder...' series asks a question.

What does this do, and why is it such an important distinction?

It immediately hooks the reader's attention and makes them actively look for answers. This mirrors how learning works:

curiosity -> exploration -> understanding

Children are naturally always asking "why" or "how". By framing learning as a quest for answers, the books transform reading into an active experience. Children aren't just passively absorbing information; they're seeking solutions and exploring ideas, which strengthens their curiosity and problem-solving mindset.

English Through Play 🐝

Spring is here which makes it the perfect time to explore nature's beauty with your child. Does your child know the life-cycle of a butterfly? From teeny tiny eggs to wiggly caterpillars, sleep chrysalises and finally oh so beautiful butterflies!

Watching little learners discover each stage of metamorphosis is a sweet reminder of how much growth can happen, one step at a time. 🐛🦋

Caterpillar longs to be able to fly. He envies Bumblebee and his wings, and he wishes he could soar through the air like a bird. All he can do is crunch and munch his way through a blackberry bush. This book is popular as an early science introduction, introducing metamorphosis in a simple way. Its combinition of repitition, simple storytelling and colourful illustrations makes it especially appealing to young learners.

Down in the Woods at Sleepytime 🐝

A charming bedtime story, the book follows a group of baby animals in the forest who don't want to go to bed when their mothers say it's sleepytime - they would rather keep playing, eating or making noise. As evening falls and nothing seems to settle them, wise Grandma Owl steps in and begins to tell them a soothing bedtime story. Gradually, the animals calm down, cuddle up and drift off to sleep, showing how gentle routines and storytelling can help bring a busy day to a peaceful end.

English Through Play 🐝

Seasons come and go, and we have watched the transition between thick, heavy winter coats to t-shirts and light jackets over the past few weeks.

Clothing changes over seasons along with the weather, and children learn to dress accordingly as they get older. Through playful learning, they can explore this concept by developing key skills while making meaningful connections between real life and what they see on these puzzle pieces.

Year 3 🐝

At Busy Bees, we have selected the 'First Greek Myths' series by Saviour Pirotta as part of our weekly comprehension work. The books, illustrated by Jan Lewis, offer a captivating introduction to the world of Greek mythology for young readers. Pirotta's storytelling balances simplicity with vivid detail, making complex myths easy to understand while still preserving the excitement and drama.

The stories have been carefully adapted to suit a younger audience, softening darker elements while retaining the core themes of curiosity, bravery, greed and consequences that have made these myths timeless.

Jan Lewis's bright, colourful illustrations play a central role in bringing the myths to life. Her expressive artwork helps to visualise gods, heroes and monsters.

To take it one step further, Busy Bees has developed a whole new meaning of bringing books 'to life' by having the characters from the books hand crafted into three-dimensional soft toys.

This week they will meet the terrifying Medusa. Perseus has a quest. He must bring the monster Medusa's head to his evil king. But how can Perseus succeed when anyone who looks at Medusa's face is turned to stone? 🐍🗡️
