Not Like That, Like This! 🐝

This is a funny story of a dad who accidentally gets his head stuck in park railings while showing his son what NOT to do. As more people try - and fail - to help, the situation becomes increasingly chaotic until he is finally freed.

It highlights and teaches children that even adults make mistakes and that problems can sometimes take many attempts to solve.

Children learn best when they start with a question!

Instead of saying "Let's learn facts about polar bears," the 'I Wonder...' series asks a question.

What does this do, and why is it such an important distinction?

It immediately hooks the reader's attention and makes them actively look for answers. This mirrors how learning works:

curiosity -> exploration -> understanding

Children are naturally always asking "why" or "how". By framing learning as a quest for answers, the books transform reading into an active experience. Children aren't just passively absorbing information; they're seeking solutions and exploring ideas, which strengthens their curiosity and problem-solving mindset.

This week, the children will explore how polar bears can stay warm in cold weather. Does your child already know the answer?❄️🐻‍❄️

Learning Colours...

💬 Enhances Language Skills - When children learn colour names, they exapand their vocabulary and improve communication.

🧠 Builds Cognitive Development - Recognising and naming colours strengthens brain connections and improves thinking skills. It helps children classify, compare and organise information.

📊 Supports Early Maths Skills - Understanding colours helps with sorting, grouping and pattern recognition - all foundational math concepts.

📚 Improves Visual Discrimination - Learning colours helps children notice similarities and differences, which is important for reading and writing later on.

🎨 Encourages Creativity - Colours allow children to express themselves through drawing, painting and imaginative play.

💭 Strengthens Memory Skills - Remembering and identifying colours improves short-term and long-term memory development.

✍️ Develops Fine Motor Skills - Colouring activities help strengthen hand muscles and improve hand-eye coordination.

✨ Builds Confidence - When preschoolers correctly identify colours, they feel successful and more confident in learning new things.

👀 Improves Focus and Attention - Sorting and matching colours requires concentration. This in turn helps children develop attention skills.

🏫 Highlights School Readiness - Colours recognition is one of the basic skills teachers expect children to know before starting kindergarten.

🙂 Supports Emotional Understanding - Colours are often linked to feelings (e.g., yellow for happy, blue for calm). Learning colours can help children express emotions.

Down in the Woods at Sleepytime 🐝

A charming bedtime story, the book follows a group of baby animals in the forest who don't want to go to bed when their mothers say it's sleepytime - they would rather keep playing, eating or making noise. As evening falls and nothing seems to settle them, wise Grandma Owl steps in and begins to tell them a soothing bedtime story. Gradually, the animals calm down, cuddle up and drift off to sleep, showing how gentle routines and storytelling can help bring a busy day to a peaceful end.

Through its gentle pace, retetition and calming tone, this story is effective in helping children wind down and feel secure before bed. ✨💤

English Through Play 🐝

Seasons come and go, and we have watched the transition between thick, heavy winter coats to t-shirts and light jackets over the past few weeks.

Clothing changes over seasons along with the weather, and children learn to dress accordingly as they get older. Through playful learning, they can explore this concept by developing key skills while making meaningful connections between real life and what they see on these puzzle pieces.

Year 3 🐝

At Busy Bees, we have selected the 'First Greek Myths' series by Saviour Pirotta as part of our weekly comprehension work. The books, illustrated by Jan Lewis, offer a captivating introduction to the world of Greek mythology for young readers. Pirotta's storytelling balances simplicity with vivid detail, making complex myths easy to understand while still preserving the excitement and drama.

The stories have been carefully adapted to suit a younger audience, softening darker elements while retaining the core themes of curiosity, bravery, greed and consequences that have made these myths timeless.

Jan Lewis's bright, colourful illustrations play a central role in bringing the myths to life. Her expressive artwork helps to visualise gods, heroes and monsters.

To take it one step further, Busy Bees has developed a whole new meaning of bringing books 'to life' by having the characters from the books hand crafted into three-dimensional soft toys.

This week they will meet the terrifying Medusa. Perseus has a quest. He must bring the monster Medusa's head to his evil king. But how can Perseus succeed when anyone who looks at Medusa's face is turned to stone? 🐍🗡️

Gigi & Lulu's Gigantic Fight 🐝

Gigi and Lulu are best friends who do everything together until a small disagreement turns into a big argument and they stop speaking to each other. Despite being encouraged to make up, both remain stubborn until a school event makes them realise that friendships don't require being exactly the same.

By the end of the story, they reconcile, learning to appreciate their differences and the importance of forgiveness.

This book is widely appreciated as a gently, relatable story for young children developing their social skills.

Subtraction made fun!🍋

Number bonds show how numbers are related as parts that make a whole. Visualising this relationship helps learners understand that subraction finds a missing part.

When students use games to manipulate number bonds like this lemonade stand, they can physically remove or separate parts. This turns subtraction into a visible action, making the idea clearer than memorising rules.

Watch Out, Wilf! 🐝

This charming little story is about Wilf, a very energetic little mouse who is always on the move. He runs, jumps, climbs and explores while ignoring his mother's repeated warnings.

Wilf's boundless enthusiasm leads to a series of humorous mishaps because he doesn't slow down or listen while highlighting the patience and exasperation of his mum.

With a funny twist, the story shows mum getting caught up in her own excitement too, illustrating a fresh new angle and underlying the importance of listening to each other.
