Research, ideas and plenty of good conversations.💡

At our annual FoKo Poster Event, PhD students and postdocs from across PSI step away from their labs and offices to share what they’re working on with their peers, colleagues, and senior scientists.

It’s a chance to make new connections, exchange ideas, ask questions and maybe start a new collaboration along the way.

How do you ignite collaboration?

🌀 What if you could flip the handedness of atomic motion with electricity?

Chiral phonons are collective atomic vibrations with a twist: their rotational motion gives them a left- or right-handed character.

Researchers at PSI have now demonstrated electrical control over this handedness. By reversing the electrical polarisation in barium titanate, they could reverse the handedness of the phonons too. They observed the effect using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESFR) in Grenoble.

Why does this matter? Chiral phonons carry angular momentum, linking atomic motion with magnetism. Learning to control them could open new possibilities for phonon-based information technologies – while also helping researchers explore fundamental questions about why handedness occurs in nature.

The first positrons have been successfully produced at a test source for CERN’s proposed future circular collider (FCC), installed at SwissFEL at PSI Paul Scherrer Institute.

A major technical challenge facing electron-positron colliders such as the FCC is producing and capturing enough positrons – something existing technologies cannot do on the scale required.

The prototype source combines new technologies developed at PSI, including high-temperature superconducting magnets, to achieve markedly higher positron yields. It is being tested using accelerated electrons from SwissFEL.

Michael Benedikt, FCC Project Leader at CERN comments on the milestone: “These results mark an important step for the FCC, validating the proposed approach for the positron source and demonstrating its potential to meet the collider’s demanding requirements.”

Congratulations to everybody in the PSI Positron Production project (P³) on this exciting achievement! Paolo Craievich, riccardo zennaro, Dominique Hauenstein, Mariia Zykova and Nick Strohmaier.

How the “unicorn of the seas” got its helix

🦄 Using synchrotron light from SLS, MAX IV, and ESRF, researchers have made the inner spiral structure of the narwhal tusk visible for the first time.

The horn of the unicorn is not a horn, but a tooth. Its bearer has no hooves, but rather fins, and it lives in Arctic waters. We’re talking about the narwhal: Its spiral tusk has inspired the human imagination for centuries.

Yet behind the myth lies a real scientific puzzle: How does this tooth, unlike all other long teeth in the animal kingdom, develop into a perfect spiral?

An international research team has now used synchrotron radiation to make the internal structure of the narwhal tusk visible for the first time, across multiple length scales – with a surprising twist: The nanoscale structure of the spiral does not rotate in just one direction, but rather in two.

Collagen structures inside the tooth – reinforced by nanometre-sized mineral crystals – form two intertwined helices with opposite handedness – an architecture that gives the tusk remarkable mechanical stability.

The measurements were carried out at three European synchrotron facilities: the Swiss Light Source SLS at the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI, MAX IV in Lund, and the ESRF in Grenoble.
The study is part of the NordForsk project “Narwhal tusks – a tale with a twist,” which investigates how growth, environmental conditions, and climate change are recorded in the structure of narwhal tusks.
