Teaching in Sierra Leone 11 years ago; I now prefer my study in London to teach students from Singapore to Uzbekistan to King’s Cross by zoom. Roll on the end of lockdown so that we can put some face to face tutoring into the mix.

Verbier Tutor’s Top Tips for Writing the Best Dissertation…

IT’S ALL IN THE PLANNING. The hard bit is in the research and structure; once you know these intimately, the writing is easy.

You need good words, so don’t start off with no direction and be encouraged by the number of electronic pages that you’ve filled; they might be rubbish.

Don’t be daunted by the word count. If you’ve done your research, 10 or 15,000 words will be a restriction, not a target.

If you have an argument, make sure that you have a thesis statement; you should be able to capture your point in one sentence.

Adhere to your required Academic Convention. It matters. A lot. If your dissertation looks a mess and is filled with mistakes, it will irritate the marker, and they’ll be preoccupied and irritated, rather than blinded by the brilliance of your dissertation.

Compile your bibliography as you go along and ensure that you keep references for your quotes. Bibliographies take forever and are an unnecessary irritation as the submission date looms.

Don’t shirk – it won’t go away, however much you neglect it. Dissertations are like Mothers’ Day, a pain in the neck, but worth the effort – the dividends pay off…

Students should communicate so that a structured, comprehensive, and realistic revision timetable can be agreed and we can concentrate on any weaknesses should tutoring be necessary.
Use of practice papers help students in time management, and are also an essential aid in highlighting weaker areas.
