Franklin Switzerland is a US- and Swiss-accredited nonprofit university based in Lugano, CH.

Franklin Switzerland is located on a hillside above Lugano, the principal city of Switzerland’s southernmost Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. An American liberal arts institution in an international environment, Franklin is fully accredited in the United States by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and in Switzerland by the Swiss University Conference. Franklin places extraordinary emphasis on cross-cultural perspectives, an emphasis designed to affect the direction and meaning of a student’s college experience, life and career. A commitment to courses of study that are international in perspective and cross-cultural in content has been the cornerstone of our educational mission since our founding in 1969. In fact, we classify this need as the international imperative in education. Franklin Switzerland awards the Bachelor of Arts degree in a number of academic areas, each enhanced by the opportunities afforded by our European location, as well as the exemplary qualifications of our faculty.

📚 We were delighted to welcome Dr. Giorgio Ennas and Dr. Ariane Mottale for a conversation about Dr. Ennas's book, Italo-Ottoman Relations in the Age of the Congress of Paris: Mirroring the ‘Other’, 1856–1871.

The discussion took us back to a fascinating chapter of 19th-century history, exploring how Italian and Ottoman diplomacy developed alongside one another, and how ideas about cultural identity and international relations were shaped along the way.

🌍 What made the conversation particularly interesting was how closely these historical questions connect to debates we're still having today.

Figuring out what comes next is part of the college experience. And at Franklin, students don’t have to figure it out alone ❤️

Through our Pathway Program, led by Justine Salam, Associate Dean for Career Readiness, we help students explore their strengths, interests, and motivations, and understand how these can shape their academic and professional futures.

Recently, students took part in a skills self-assessment that encouraged them to reflect on what they do well, what they enjoy, and what matters to them.

🎯 It’s one of the ways Franklin brings career preparation into the student experience, combining the transferable skills of a liberal arts education with the personal guidance students need to find their own path.

It took five mines for Dr. Waldo Perez to make a dollar, and that might be the most interesting part of his story.

👉️ Over nearly three decades, Dr. Perez has explored more than 100 mineral prospects, helped uncover some of the world’s largest lithium deposits, and served as President and CEO of Neo Lithium, Lithium Americas, and Latin American Minerals.

At our latest Meet the Manager, he shared what happened behind those achievements, and why his most important lesson for creating value is persistence: “One hundred times may not be enough.”

Last Wednesday brought a little friendly competition to the Tone Athletic Center ⚽️

Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors took to the field for a charity soccer tournament, while students gathered on the sidelines to cheer on their classmates, enjoy the music, and support the Boki Mamiko bake sale.

Boki Mamiko has been part of the Franklin community for years, creating opportunities for students to come together while giving back and supporting charitable causes.

Moments like these are also part of what makes the experience of studying at an American university in Switzerland and living on a residential campus so unique: the community extends well beyond the classroom.

Thank you to everyone who played, cheered, organized, baked, and helped make the afternoon happen! 🤍

More than 700 students from Franklin Switzerland, USI and SUPSI gathered at East Campus for YOUniversity, Beyond Studies Party.

Between DJ sets, student associations and activities, the evening gave Lugano’s university communities the chance to meet, connect and begin the new academic year together.

This edition also introduced the first YOUniversity Games, a team tournament built around collaboration, strategy and team spirit. Congratulations to the Franklin Warriors, who brought home the trophy! 🏆

Some news we’re especially happy to share 🎓

After joining Franklin as a postdoctoral researcher with the DIVIDE team, Giacomo Lemoli is heading to Madrid, where he will become Assistant Professor of Political Science at CUNEF Universidad in Spring 2027.

👉️ During his time with us, Giacomo has been a researcher, teacher, colleague, and an important part of our growing Political Science community. His work has taken Franklin to conferences in Switzerland, the UK, and the US, while his research with DIVIDE has explored some of today’s most fascinating questions around democracy, identity, and political polarization.

And while Madrid is next, this isn’t goodbye: Giacomo will continue collaborating with the DIVIDE team on their ongoing research.

We couldn’t be happier to celebrate this achievement with him. Congratulations, Giacomo! 👏

Imagine getting the American college experience without giving up the European dream🇨🇭🇮🇹

Franklin’s home in Lugano puts our students in a pretty unique corner of Europe. They live and study surrounded by the lakes and mountains of southern Switzerland, while the Italian border, and Lake Como, are less than half an hour away.

It means that outside the classroom, completely different places and experiences are remarkably close: an afternoon in the mountains, a swim in a Swiss lake, lunch in Como, or a weekend exploring another part of Europe.

All while experiencing an American education and campus life from one of Switzerland’s most beautiful corners 💙
