🌍 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲?

At the recent 75th AIEST Conference in St. Gallen, one fundamental question returned to the centre of our discussions: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 – 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭?

Recent events around the world give this question another dimension. From the devastating floods in 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥, to multiple natural hazards affecting 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚,while a strengthening 𝐄𝐥 𝐍𝐢ñ𝐨 may increase the likelihood of extreme weather in different parts of the world.

🌱 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠.

Visitors may become people to protect or evacuate. Tourism may place additional pressure on communities – or later become an important part of their recovery.

Perhaps this invites us to think beyond definitions based mainly on mobility, purpose and length of stay 💭

❓What if tourism were also understood as a 𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬?
❓And if it is a relationship, what happens when the place we visit becomes vulnerable?
❓ What is the relationship – and 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 – of a tourist towards the place being visited?
