🔎 Have you ever struggled to read tiny print on the packaging or leaflets of a medical device or implant?

🌟 To address this, the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) has launched MedTechLabel, a collaborative project developing a universal digital labelling framework for medical devices and in vitro diagnostic tools across all classes.

👉 Scanning a QR code will give healthcare professionals and patients immediate access to up-to-date, targeted product information in their choice of language. This initiative reduces physical packaging waste, minimizes administrative burdens on manufacturers, and improves clinical accessibility.

📰 Read the full news release to learn how digital labelling is improving patient safety and clinical efficiency.

👩‍⚕️ 👨‍⚕️ Is aspirin just as good as traditional anticoagulants for preventing blood clots after hip and knee replacements?

📰 A new systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 RCTs involving over 30,000 patients in EFORT Open Review breaks down the evidence! 💡👇

🔍 Key Highlights:

🧿 Equal Protection: Antiplatelet agents (like aspirin) perform similarly to anticoagulants in preventing VTE, DVT, and PE after joint replacement.

🩸 Fewer Bleeding Issues: Patients on antiplatelet therapy experienced significantly fewer subcutaneous hematomas compared to those taking anticoagulants.

💰 Cost-Effective & Convenient: Aspirin provides a low-cost, widely accessible option that doesn't require complex monitoring.

📊 Subgroup Differences: Recent studies using mechanical prophylaxis showed higher VTE rates with antiplatelets, while female patients had better protection on antiplatelet therapy!

💊 Aspirin remains a strong, safe, and cost-effective contender for post-op clot prevention!

👩‍⚕️ 👨‍⚕️ Performing Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) in patients with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) is one of the most technical procedures in orthopaedic trauma and joint reconstruction!

✨Because the dysplastic acetabulum is often shallow, oval, and deficient in bone, getting the cup position right is crucial for long-term success.

🌟 A recent review in EFORT Open Review dives into the key acetabular replacement principles and techniques every hip surgeon should know.

👉 Key Highlights:

🦵 True Acetabulum vs. High Hip Center: Restoring the cup to its natural anatomic position gives the best biomechanical advantage for the abductor muscles and restores leg length. In severe dislocations, placing the cup 1–2 cm higher can be a safe compromise, but watch out for lateralisation!

🦴 How Much Bone Coverage? Aim for at least 75–80% host bone contact with cementless cups. Controlled medialisation, autologous bone grafts, or porous metal augments help fill superolateral gaps effectively.

🦿 Cementless Is Key: Modern cementless porous-coated or trabecular metal cups held with screws show far superior survivorship compared to older cemented techniques.

🤖 Robotics & 3D Planning: CT-based 3D planning and robotic assistance are making cup sizing and orientation much more precise in complex dysplastic hips!

📚 Out Now: EFORT Open Reviews (EOR) July 2026 Issue Summary! 📚

The July 2026 issue of EFORT Open Reviews covers 16 vital studies across trauma, reconstructive surgery, joint arthroplasty, and orthobiologics!

Here is a quick look at the core practice-changing takeaways:

1️⃣ Trauma & Limb Salvage:
🔸 Open Tibia Fractures: Using the Angiosome concept guides sharp debridement. R2econstruction within 3–7 days protects against soft-tissue necrosis while keeping infection risks low.
🔸 Hidden Knee Injuries: Up to 58% of femoral shaft fractures have concomitant knee ligament injuries—most commonly the MCL (23%). Examination under anaesthesia post-fixation is essential!

2️⃣ Joint Replacement & Reconstruction:
🔸 In-depth reviews on alignment strategies in total knee replacement, revision arthroplasty, and managing complex periprosthetic joint issues.

3️⃣ Advanced Diagnostics & Biologics:
🔸 Incorporating intraoperative thermal imaging and ICG fluorescence angiography to check tissue viability in real time.
