Meet Archie! 🌿

Over the past two weeks, Archie traveled from the UK to complete a summer intensive with Hunter here at Resilient Roots.

While our school is built around small-group learning, each summer also gives us the opportunity to offer a limited number of individualized intensives for students who would benefit from a more focused starting point. These intensives are designed to establish meaningful goals, build effective support strategies, and create a strong foundation—whether a student returns home with new tools or continues their journey with us.

For Archie and his family, those two weeks became the beginning of something bigger.

We're excited to share that Archie will be joining our school community this year as his family relocates to Portugal. Over the coming months, we'll continue building on the work we've started while supporting his growing independence, communication, and participation within our community.

Welcome to the Resilient Roots family, Archie! We're so glad you're coming back.

Today, we’re celebrating Lisa and the important role she played in our first year at Resilient Roots. 🌿

Throughout the school year, Lisa shared her time, patience, and knowledge while teaching Portuguese to our students. Her lessons helped our learners build confidence with the language and feel more connected to the community around them.

This fall, Lisa will begin an exciting new chapter as she moves to Canada for graduate school. We are so grateful that she chose to support our students and believe in our vision during such an important year for our school.

Thank you for everything, Lisa. We will miss you and are wishing you so much success and happiness in Canada!

What an incredible Survivor Week! 🏕️

We've loved spending the week with both new and familiar faces as campers learned survival skills, tackled team challenges, built confidence, and made new friendships along the way.

From building shelters and tying knots to reading maps, filtering water, and competing in tribe challenges, every day has been full of adventure, laughter, and teamwork.

Tomorrow our tribes compete one last time to see who will be crowned our Survivor Week champions! 🏆 We can't wait to finish the week strong!

As we wrap up our very first school year at Resilient Roots Community School, our hearts are full. 💚

The past few days have been the perfect celebration of an incredible year filled with growth, laughter, friendship, and unforgettable memories.

When we opened our doors, we dreamed of creating a school where every child would be truly known, supported, and encouraged to thrive. Looking back now, we are so grateful to the families who believed in that vision and trusted us with their children.

This year, we've grown not only as a school, but as a community. More importantly, we've had the privilege of watching every one of our students grow in confidence, independence, resilience, and curiosity. Their progress has been our greatest success.

To our students, thank you for making every day meaningful. To our families, thank you for your trust, partnership, and unwavering support.

Year one may be coming to a close, but this is only the beginning. We are so excited for what lies ahead and can't wait to continue growing together.

⚽🏆 Our Mini World Cup Champion: Portugal!

After Spring Break, students began learning the fundamentals of football (soccer) during Outdoor Education. Over the following weeks, they built their skills through passing, dribbling, teamwork, and game play.

In June, those skills were put to the test as students were divided into five two-person national teams and competed in our Mini World Cup. After weeks of round-robin matches and knockout rounds, today's final came down to penalty kicks, where Team Portugal edged out Team Japan to take the title!

More important than the result was the growth we saw along the way—teamwork, perseverance, communication, sportsmanship, and resilience under pressure.

Congratulations to all of our players on a fantastic tournament. And who knows... maybe Portugal's win today will bring a little extra luck to the real Portugal for the World Cup. 😉

🌱 Big News from Resilient Roots! 🌱

Thanks to the growth of our amazing community, we'll be moving to a larger home this fall!

Our new location will provide more space for learning, movement, and connection—including our own outdoor areas for students to enjoy—while keeping us right here in the heart of Ericeira.

We're incredibly grateful for the building that helped us begin this journey and for every family who has helped us grow.

The next chapter is looking bright. 💚

Things we normalize at Resilient Roots

Flexible output styles.
Because understanding is not limited to one type of response.

Trying again.
Because perseverance is more important than perfection.

Regulation breaks.
Because children learn best when they feel regulated and supported.

Learning through movement.
Because movement can strengthen focus, coordination, and engagement.

What if the learning model itself was intentionally designed around how children actually develop, regulate, process, and learn?

Traditional education often expects learners to adapt to a fixed system.

On the opposite end, some modern models push children into highly individualized pathways through independent work, AI-supported instruction, or periodic tutor check-ins with limited true peer engagement.

We believe children need both.

Individualized support matters deeply—but so does learning in community.

At Resilient Roots, students participate in intentionally designed small-group learning that builds communication, collaboration, perspective-taking, and confidence, while also receiving targeted support for executive functioning, regulation, and learner-specific growth.

And as students grow older, academics become increasingly anchored in real life—because deeper learning happens when content has meaning.

This is more than differentiation.

It is intentional learning design.

Rooted in Potential. Growing in Resilience.

Showers shouldn’t feel like a battle, but for many children, they do.

This is not about defiance or lack of motivation. Tasks like showering involve multiple steps, low interest, and very little immediate reward. For children with attention and regulation challenges, that combination can feel overwhelming.

When something feels overwhelming, the brain avoids it. That’s a response, not a choice.

Instead of increasing pressure, we shift the approach. We break tasks into manageable starting points, add small elements of engagement, and make the steps clear and predictable.

Once a child can start, they are much more likely to follow through.

This is how independence develops. Not through repeated prompting, but by giving children the tools to access tasks more easily and feel capable doing them.

It takes time, but it works. And when it does, the difference is meaningful for the whole family. 💛
