Today's dilemma....the use of artifact or artefact!

Artifact is the US spelling of the British artefact. However, an artefact can refer to an artificial product or an effect observed in a natural system (often introduced during scientific experimentation or experimental error), whereas an artifact is something produced by human hand (i.e. something historical).

Interesting reading this morning.....should we be using I/We in our scientific writing?

Einstein, Darwin, Marie Curie, as well as Watson and Crick seemed to know what they were talking about and described their work in the first-person. Maybe it is time that we dropped the passive tone? My feeling is that care should be taken and I/We used sparingly to avoid turning our publications into something that sounds like it was written by a primary school child!
