Rhubarb is one of the easiest plants for beginners, and you can enjoy those pink stems from the first year. Gently pull off a few stems, leaving at least half of them to help the plant grow for next year. The stems are delicious poached, in cakes, muffins or even in granola! The leaves are perfect for the compost heap, too.

Comfrey, or Symphytum officinale, isn't just lovely to look at, it has a whole host of benefits for plants and pollinators. You can use the leaves to make home-made plant fertiliser, fill up a lidded bucket with chopped up leaves, weight down the leaves, fill up the bucket with water and put the lid on. Leave it 4-6 weeks, far away from the house as it smells pretty pungent. Drain off the sludge and decant the remaining liquid, which you can dilute 1/3 comfrey "tea" and 2/3 water to feed your plants.
