Student Content Calendar Initiative

We’re excited to launch our Student Content Calendar Initiative at WOSTEP, a new way to share authentic moments from our watchmaking classes, created with our students.

Today’s post comes from one of our watchmaker student, Gaetano Carizza : I recently stayed after class to create my own black polishing tripod. Using the school’s technical drawings as a foundation, I added my personal touch to the design, producing a tool that reflects both my technical skills and craftsmanship.
Black polishing, also known as poli noir or specular finishing, is one of the most prestigious hand-finishing techniques in haute horlogerie. It is used to create an exceptionally flat, mirror-like surface on steel watch components. When viewed at a perpendicular angle, the surface reflects light in a single direction, appearing deep black. At other angles, it reveals a brilliant, mirror-like shine.

Achieving this finish requires patience, precision, and meticulous attention to detail. The process begins by removing machining marks and scratches using progressively finer abrasive papers or stones. The component is then polished through a series of increasingly fine abrasives, with careful cleaning between each stage to avoid contamination. The final black-polishing stage is performed using an ultra-fine abrasive on a perfectly flat, hard polishing surface, resulting in an exceptionally smooth, highly reflective finish.

Projects such as demonstrate the dedication, creativity, and technical expertise that WOSTEP students develop throughout their training.

Student Content Calendar Initiative

We’re excited to launch our Student Content Calendar Initiative at WOSTEP, a new way to share authentic moments from our watchmaking classes, created with our students.

Today’s post comes from Francisco Amezcua, one of our customer service watchmaker student : this week, we completed several exercises and created useful tools for watch servicing, including the wooden block, sawing plate, and poising plate.

We also learned how to properly finish watchmaking components and practiced techniques such as beveling, both on the holes we drilled and on the plates that we flattened and shaped using files.

These exercises allowed us to improve our precision, finishing techniques, and overall understanding of the skills required for professional watch service.

Completion of First Aid and Fire Safety Technical Training

Our Customer Service Watchmaker students have successfully completed a technical First Aid and Fire Safety training delivered by Formamed.
This program covered essential emergency‑response protocols, including injury assessment, CPR fundamentals, use of first‑aid equipment, fire‑risk identification, and correct handling of extinguishing devices.

These competencies strengthen their ability to react effectively in critical situations, ensuring a safer working environment.

Our P05 students in Neuchâtel are gearing up for the Winding Stem module, and the new Sylvac comparators just landed.

The exam benchmark: turning precision to within a tolerance 10x smaller than a human hair. It's a reminder of what "Swiss Made" actually demands from the people who make it.
