So sad to read this news.

Today I learned of the passing of Sugawa Sensei.

I had the privilege of meeting him in Japan in 2014 while visiting the Kumano Jyuku dojo. At the time, Sugawa Sensei was in charge of the organization. As the head of the organization, he was everything one would expect from a lifelong martial artist—serious, disciplined, and possessing an extraordinary depth of skill developed through more than sixty years of dedicated Aikido practice.

Yet away from the mat, another side of him emerged. He had a genuine sense of humor and was quite a charming man. It was a reminder that true strength and humility often go hand in hand.

His lifetime of dedication to Aikido earned the respect of countless students around the world, and his influence will continue through those who carry on his teachings.

It was an honor to have met him, and I will always be grateful for the effort he made to meet and welcome us that day.

My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched.

Rest in peace, Sugawa Sensei.
