On this page, we share some pics of our daily life at the MAP and keep you updated with the main philosophical events taking place in Lugano (Switzerland). The MAP is a research-oriented master focusing on theoretical analytic philosophy, and in particular on:

ing-edge research topics, the MAP offers Masterclasses with eminent philosophers and seminars in the historical development of such topics. The Lugano Philosophy Colloquia return this autumn!

From September to December, the Institute of Philosophy at USI will welcome Cristian Mariani, Amir Šulić, Xinhe Wu, Byron Simmons, Valia Allori, and María Cerezo for a new series of talks.

The colloquia will take place on selected Fridays at 4.30 pm in Room Multiuso, FTL Building, USI West Campus, and will also be accessible via Zoom.

Talk titles and abstracts will be announced soon.

MAP Course Spotlight: Study Metaphysics and Grounding with Stephan Leuenberger!

"Today, grounding is part of the standard conceptual repertoire used for articulating philosophical hypotheses and formulating arguments, along with mereology and first-order logic with identity. Regimented concepts of grounding has proved fruitful in a number of debates. The aim of this course is to familiarise students with the technical idiom of grounding (expressions such as ‘fully grounds’ and ‘partially grounds’), and with key contemporary theories about the status and features of the corresponding relations."

MAP Course Spotlight: Study Philosophy of Mind with Bence Nanay!

"The aim of this course is to give an interdisciplinary introduction to the study of perception. It combines philosophical, psychological and neuroscientific approaches to the topic. Besides the classic questions about the metaphysics of perception and about perceptual content, special emphasis is given to the intricate connections between perception and action and to perception that is not triggered by sensory input (a category that encompasses mental imagery, dreaming and hallucination). Further, too much of the (philosophical, psychological and neuroscientific) discussion about perception has focused on vision. This course aims to correct this imbalance and give equal (or almost equal) amount of space to all the sense modalities."

MAP Course Spotlight: Study Philosophy of Physics with Tim Maudlin!

What is called “quantum theory” is not actually a physical theory, i.e. a specification of a clear physical ontology and dynamics. This conceptual failure manifests itself in many ways, perhaps the most prominent of which is called the “measurement problem” (but which Philip Pearle has accurately called a “reality problem”). We will investigate the structure of quantum mechanics as it is usually presented and then look at several distinct physical theories that can recover—or nearly recover—the predictions made by using the quantum formalism in the usual way. We will pay particular attention to general results about physical reality, particularly Bell’s Theorem and the PBR theorem.
