At the market last week, one of my students — visiting as a customer that day — threw down a challenge: turn a spinning top in 50 seconds.
I said yes without really thinking about it. Turned out I didn't have to change much — maybe a touch faster than usual, but otherwise just doing what I always do at the lathe.
42 seconds later, done. 😌

Almost 60 years ago, a woodturner in a small village in Ticino turned this little salt box.
I found it recently while clearing out my parents' holiday home — and it hit me instantly. This was the first turned piece I ever held in my hands. I was maybe 5 years old, standing in his workshop, completely mesmerized watching him work at the lathe.
I didn't know it then, but that moment planted something. Decades later, here I am — still turning wood, still chasing that same fascination.
The little box is coming home with me. I'll hang it in my own workshop from that carved hook, probably as a pen holder. A small circle closing after almost 60 years.
Sometimes the smallest things shape an entire path.
