♟️ Every Lesson Counts: FIDE Summit in Samarkand puts chess education at the heart of global development

The FIDE Summit on Chess in Education brought together ministers, policymakers, educators, researchers, programme leaders and chess professionals from around the world in Samarkand to explore how chess can become a meaningful part of school education.

The day opened with addresses by Viswanathan Anand, Interim President of FIDE, and Timur Turlov, President of ISCF, followed by the Year of Chess in Education 2026 Awards and a keynote by Rahul Bose.

The programme featured inspiring lectures on making chess fun and accessible for every child, supporting refugees and conflict-affected communities, and the first results of the Global Survey on Chess in Education. Three panel discussions explored long-running programmes, new initiatives and opportunities for international partnerships.

From teacher training and research to policy and collaboration, the Summit highlighted a shared vision: chess in education is moving beyond individual projects and towards a stronger, more connected global system.

♟️ FIDE Chess in Education Commission Meeting – Samarkand 2026

The FIDE Chess in Education Commission gathered in Samarkand as part of the FIDE Congress 2026 for a productive and inspiring meeting dedicated to the development of chess as an educational tool worldwide.

The session brought together FIDE officials, educators, chess professionals, advocates and colleagues from different countries to share experiences, achievements and new initiatives in Chess in Education.

The meeting covered a wide range of important topics, including:

• The development and growing reach of FIDE Chess in Education courses
• The FIDE School Awards and their continued development
• International conferences, school visits and educational projects around the world
• The Master School Visit programme, including initiatives in Singapore and Budapest
• Chess in Education initiatives in New York and India
• Teacher training and the IOC project in India
• Experiences from Kazakhstan and Tamil Nadu, including work with tribal communities
• Global survey findings and new FIDE Chess in Education content
• Weekly storytelling and classroom initiatives

The meeting also provided an opportunity to hear from colleagues and key advocates working to bring chess into more classrooms and educational environments worldwide.

What connects all these initiatives is a shared belief that chess is much more than a game. It is a powerful educational tool that can support critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, social skills and lifelong learning.
