From jatropha seeds to innovation for cleaner energy!

We are proud to highlight the remarkable work of one of the young people supported as part of the EXAF-JFD project in Tanzania.

During the 2026 National Education, Skills and Innovation Week, held in Tanga, he presented a project exploring the use of jatropha seeds for biodiesel production. This initiative transforms a local resource into a potential source of cleaner energy.

His project was among the most outstanding student initiatives selected as part of the competition organised at the end of the mentoring programme for primary and secondary school pupils in the Arusha region.

This initiative fully illustrates the importance of empowering young people to experiment, develop their creativity and propose practical solutions to the challenges of tomorrow.

Congratulations to this young person on their work and commitment! Their journey reminds us that innovation can begin at a very young age. And well done to Thomas Kivevele, PhD, for initiating this project.

What if cleaning up our planet wasn’t just about picking up litter?

To mark , we can also ask ourselves what becomes of the resources we currently regard as waste.

Several research projects under are exploring precisely this question.

▪️ Using demolition and industrial waste to create new materials
Abla Leaticia Kouassi is working on developing eco-friendly, lightweight and thermally insulating materials from pumice and marble slurry.
https://lnkd.in/eVxfpRA4

▪️ Agricultural waste to combat pollutants
Lydia Mwikali, AMRSC is studying the presence of PFAS in drinking water and exploring the effectiveness of maize-derived biochar in removing them.
https://lnkd.in/dbW88jre

▪️ Electronic waste as a source of precious metals
Abdessamad EL AMRI is developing porous materials capable of selectively capturing gold present in electronic waste.
https://lnkd.in/eRsEkkcF

▪️ Recycled agricultural and plastic waste to produce bioplastics
Maurine Naliaka Andanje is studying the production of bioplastics from agricultural waste.
https://lnkd.in/d3d3hvbr

These projects have different applications, but share the same ambition: to transform waste into resources and contribute to a more circular economy.

Because cleaning up may also begin with the way we design, produce and reuse.

From waste to safer drinking water: when research turns local challenges into solutions.

Congratulations to Joseph Jjagwe, from the first cohort of 100 PhDs for Africa, on the publication of his latest research on the removal of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) from drinking water.

His study explores an innovative approach: transforming steel industry waste and rice husks into a magnetic nanocomposite capable of removing traces of these toxic metals from contaminated water.

Tested on drinking water sources in Uganda, the material achieved high removal efficiencies for both lead and cadmium, while retaining more than 80% of its capacity after five regeneration cycles.

Beyond the scientific results, this research highlights the potential of circular economy approaches to address pressing environmental and public health challenges in Africa — turning locally available waste streams into resources for cleaner water.

A great example of how the 100 PhDs for Africa programme supports African researchers in developing solutions rooted in local realities and with potential for real-world impact.

Congratulations Joseph and the entire research team!

When malnutrition cannot be explained solely by a lack of food: the microbiome reveals another story.

Congratulations to Grantina Modern, from 100PhDs for Africa, on the publication last March of her paper on the links between nutrition, WaSH (water, sanitation and hygiene) practices and the gut microbiome in young children in Tanzania.

This study shows that childhood stunting is not solely linked to food availability. Feeding practices, breastfeeding, hygiene and the environment have a significant influence on the gut microbiome and, consequently, on children’s growth. The findings pave the way for more targeted interventions to combat malnutrition.
