Scanning vs Skimming vs In-depth Reading

⁉ Which to choose?

The process of scanning:
1️⃣ Determine the specific keywords that will be employed during the process of reading.
2️⃣ When engaging in the act of reading, it is advisable to swiftly scan the page and identify keywords, rather than fixating solely on comprehending the overall content.
3️⃣ When encountering terms that are pertinent to the topic at hand, it is advisable to pause and engage in a more thorough reading.

The process of Skimming:
1️⃣ It is advisable to read the table of contents in order to gain a preliminary understanding of the subjects addressed within the text.
2️⃣ It is important to observe the various components present in a scholarly document, including but not limited to the abstract, headers, introduction, keywords, bibliography, and index. The following will serve as indicators for the sequence of debate.
3️⃣ In order to effectively analyse the structure of a paragraph, it is recommended to carefully examine the initial sentence, which introduces the main issue, as well as the concluding sentence, which provides a summary or final thought.
4️⃣ Please review any sentences that feature stressed points (in bold or italics).
5️⃣ It is advisable to refrain from engaging with irrelevant data.

The process of In-Depth Reading:
1️⃣ This methodology requires a significant investment of time; nevertheless, employing this approach enables one to concentrate on the data that is directly pertinent to their research. Based on the preliminary scanning and skimming conducted earlier, it is now advisable to allocate sufficient time to engage in a more thorough reading of the specific sections of the text that are of interest.

In summary:
👉 The process of scanning enables individuals to effectively search and identify significant keywords within a given source.
👉 Skimming is a reading technique that allows individuals to quickly assess the content of a source text and determine if specific sections contain pertinent information.
👉 The practice of in-depth reading focuses on select areas of a text that are very relevant, perhaps applicable to either a subset or the majority of the entire material.
