EPFL EPFL is one of the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology. EPFL is Europe’s most cosmopolitan technical university.
(1262)

It has three missions: education, research and technology transfer at the highest international level. It receives students, professors and staff from over 120 nationalities. With both a Swiss and international calling, it is therefore guided by a constant wish to open up; its missions of teaching, research and partnership impact various circles: universities and engineering schools, developing and emerging countries, secondary schools and gymnasiums, industry and economy, political circles and the general public.

The brain isn’t just cells and wiring. Much of it is made of lipids that help brain cells send and receive signals.

“Scientists have had only a blurry picture of how lipids differ from one part of the brain to another”, explains Giovanni D’Angelo, professor at The Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Foundation Chair in Nutrition and Metabolism.

Together with Luca Fusar Bassini, Gioele La Manno and their teams at the School of Life Sciences, they have built a detailed atlas of lipids across the entire mouse brain. They uncovered over 500 biochemical zones and how the map is redrawn during pregnancy.

Artificial intelligence is forcing universities to reinvent how they teach and assess students’ knowledge. According to Dan Schwartz, an expert in learning science at Stanford, the challenge goes well beyond deciding whether to let AI into the classroom – teachers need to think long and hard abo...
