Do you know what Judo is? It is a Japanese self-defense art and it literally means "the gentle way". The attacker tries to hit you and you reply remaining relaxed and balanced while preserving your own mental and physical energy.
The concept is very powerful and it also applies to communication whenever someone attacks you or simply absorbs your energies. The winning strategy is to maintain a quiet state, using your opponent's weight and strength as weapons against him. An example? The great hypnotist Milton Erikson received a call from a patient ready to su***de himself. Instead of entering into the savior's role, Milton replied quietly: "You are an intelligent person and I am sure that if you have come to this conclusion it is because you have already considered all the options and therefore I respect your choice which is certainly the right one for you. Before hanging up I ask you only one question: how much money do you have in your bank account?”. Then Milton, genially suggested, that it would be a shame to loose that money and that it was certainly better to spend it all on travel and follies before killing himself. It ended up that the patient met a partner during his trip, the got married and had children! The point is that there are people who take your time and energy by unloading their problems on you, just to play a role. Your solutions cannot work for them and sometimes they don't even ask for them. They drain your attention and the only way to get out of the game is to return them the ball, just like judo teaches.

Words have supernatural power. Do you remember the famous magic formula: “Abracadabra”? In ancient Aramaic, it literally means “I create while I speak”. The language uses words as a craftsman uses pearls to make a precious necklace. It's not just about aesthetics, words have a physiological impact on your brain, changing your perceptions and therefore your reality.
Instead of saying what you don't want, express what you want to achieve, this is how the goals are formulated, maximum of 5 words in a positive form: "I want to feel wonderfully well", instead of: "I don't want to feel bad anymore".

How important are words? Each word we hear is translated into images that activate chemical reactions in our brain. Therefore, words have great power: that of inducing emotional states in our body. In coaching and in NLP, we use this mechanism to call up resources. How does it work? just focus on a word or and image linked to a specific emotional state, to recall it in the here and now.
Do you need to relax? Think about when you felt very relaxed, visualize a meaningful image and focus on it. Your brain will react by producing endorphins and making you feel relaxed. By repeating the exercise several times, an emotional anchor is created.
P.S.: Warning, the technique works with any mood and even if you are not conscious of it.
P.S.S.: For more scientific details on this topic you can check “Molecules of Emotions” by Candace B. Pert.

Have you ever been stuck? a "magical" coaching technique is to imagine that your obstacle does not exist: "if you had an Aladdin's lamp ...", the obstacle is removed by stimulating your brain’s most creative part. While visualizing how you would do without any obstacle, you activate your internal resources, becoming aware of your abilities. Finally, you find your solution employing the resources you have identified!
Coaching is more affordable than a magic Lamp! When do you like to start? Rub your cell phone now and call me!

Do you need a genie in the lamp?
Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a genie in the lamp ready to solve any difficult situation. It would be magnificent, right?
Imagine that you have planned an outdoor barbecue: you invited friends, you chose the menu and all the rest; then, on that very day it rains! You look at the sky and you think that if you had that famous magic lamp, you would ask the genie to materialize a shining sun! Would it make you feel better? Of course, definitely! However, whenever you feel like a victim, you are splitting reality between problem and solution, ugly and beautiful, good and bad. This is called "dualism" and it arises when as children we learn that our body has a boundary and that there is an “inner” and an “outer”, an "I" and a "them". Western culture is strongly dualistic, unlike other currents of thought that reason in terms of "whole" and "one".
Is dualism good? We all look for positive experiences and reject the negative ones, thinking that feeling good means maximizing the good and minimizing the bad, forgetting that reality is out of our control and that all experiences are temporary. What if every problem already came with the solution? If we think about it for a moment, it is almost always like that. We often focus on the problem and become unable to see the solution that is already there. An old Italian saying goes: "God gives you the right cold, based on the clothes you have", which means that the difficulties you experience are always at your level, and you already have the tools to face and overcome them. Of course, a genie would be convenient for everyone, at a price, though: to stop learning from life and not grow anymore, because without challenges the human being does not evolve.
A coach is much better than a genie! A coach accompanies you and stimulates you through a personal growth path in which: you analyze your problem, set a clear goal, evaluate the options available for you and those you can acquire, and establish a personal action plan to achieve your desired result. When do you like to start? Rub your cell phone now and call me!

Coaching is becoming more and more popular today and it happens to meet people saying to be coaches or having coaching sessions. Would you like to know what makes the difference for a coaching qualification?
The certification process is like quality funnel on a production line: it ensures that only the good products are shipped to the market. That's why I have started the ICF certification process with IDC. In the video, Heléne (IDC institute founder) and Luca (coach and trainer at IDC), explain why it is important to be certified as a coach.
The more your coach is qualified, the more you can trust him/her. Next time you meet a coach, why don't ask him what kind of certification he or she holds?

The hero's journey is a very useful pattern, even in coaching, that resonates with our very deep psychology. It is not for a case most of the successful writers, since Omero, are using it in their bestsellers, and Hollywood's studios earn millions each year with always the same script:
1) Call or crisis
2) Refusal
3) Engagement or pass the threshold
4) Fight and lose
5) Find new resources or mentors
6) Fight and win
7) Come back to share the gift
In coaching, I use this pattern to stimulate my client, that, like the hero, needs new resources to win his/her battles.
Are you curious about this? I suggest you read a nice book from Joseph Campbell: "A hero with a thousand faces"
