The European Chess Union is an independent association which has the exclusive right to organise the European Chess Championships.

Members are the European national chess federations. The Objects for which the European Chess Union is established are:
(a) to safeguard and further the interest and development of chess within its jurisdiction (as established by the territory of its Members) as well as safeguarding and promoting the interests of its Members
(b) to represent the interests of its Members at FIDE and other international organisations;
(c) to foster a positive framework of friendship and collaboration and generate peaceful relationships between the European Chess Union and its Members within its said jurisdiction;
(d) to provide an organisation for the promotion and participation of chess in all related existing and future activities, tournaments and other competitions and seminars within its said jurisdiction;
(e) to disseminate useful and instructive articles and ideas with respect to chess education;
(f) to raise funds by means of membership subscriptions, fees for services or otherwise for all the purposes and its Objects in such amounts and in such manner as may be authorised by the General Assembly; and
(g) to do all such other lawful things as are helpful to the attainment of the above Objects.

The 41st European Chess Club Cup and the 30th European Chess Club Cup for Women were officially declared opened yesterday! ♟️

🎊 The Opening Ceremony of the event took place at the Hotel Complex Slovenska Plaza, starting with musical performances, speeches by officials, and finishing with a spectacular firework show.

➡️ The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Sports and Youth of Montenegro Mr. Zoran Jojic, Mayor of the Municipality of Budva Mr. Nikola Jovanovic, the ECU President Mr. Zurab Azmaiparashvili, President of Montenegro Chess Federation Mr. Jovan Milovic, ECU Honorary Vice President Mr. Veselin Draskovic, ECU Tournament Director Mr. Peter Pisk, ECU Honorary Vice President Mr. Moshe Slav, and other distinguished guests.

♟️ The evening concluded with the Technical Meeting, attended by team captains, Chief Arbiter Mr. Igor Vujacic, President of the Montenegro Chess Federation and Tournament Director Mr. Jovan Milovic, ECU Tournament Director Mr. Petr Pisk, and other officials. During the meeting, team captains were briefed on the official regulations and key organisational details of the championship.

The 41st European Chess Club Cup and the 30th European Chess Club Cup for Women is set to kick off in Budva, Montenegro! 🏆

⏳ The Opening ceremony of the event is scheduled for this evening with the start at 18:00 CEST, while the games start tomorrow at 14:00 CEST!

📣 With 130 registered teams – 108 teams in the Open section and 22 in the Women’s section, the event broke the participation record previously set in Rhodes in 2025 where 122 teams participated.

✨ The European Club Cup gathers strongest Chess Clubs and Teams of Europe, and the Open section line-up is this year headlined by teams: Bayegan Pendik Chess Sports Club 🇹🇷, defending champions SuperChess Romania 🇷🇴, Alkaloid 🇲🇰, Novy Bor Chess Club 🇨🇿, and Tuxera Aquaprofit Nagykanizsai 🇭🇺.

💫The top seeds in the Women’s section are: defending champions Cercle d’Echecs de Monte-Carlo 🇲🇨, Sirmium Sremska Mitrovica 🇷🇸, SuperChess Romania 🇷🇴, CE Gambit Bonnevoie 🇱🇺, and Odlar Yurdu 🇦🇿.

➡️The teams are represented by Europe’s and World’s best Grandmasters, including the following players in the Open section: GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov, GM Wei Yi, GM Anish Giri, GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, GM Amin Tabatabaei, GM Jorden Van Foreest, GM Nodirbek Yakubboev, GM Richard Rapport, and GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.

The 6th Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners will take place on October 13–15, 2026, bringing together incarcerated players from around the world for three days of international online competition.

This year’s championship is set to establish a new participation record, with 140 teams from 56 countries registered for the event. The competition will feature men’s, women’s and youth sections, with teams competing across multiple groups and time zones.

Organised by FIDE and the Cook County (Chicago, IL, USA) Sheriff’s Office, the championship demonstrates how chess can be used as an educational and social tool in correctional facilities. Since the first Intercontinental Championship in 2021, the initiative has expanded across six continents, promoting critical thinking, emotional control, teamwork and skills that can support reintegration into society.

EUROPEAN CORPORATE CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2026: WHERE CHESS MEETS BUSINESS

Under the patronage of the European Chess Union, the European Corporate Chess Championship returns to the Paris region, organised by Asnières Le Grand Échiquier. Previous editions have gathered more than 50 teams and some 250 players.

Dates: 27 and 28 November 2026
Venue: Espace Concorde-Francis Delage, 27 rue de la Concorde, 92600 Asnières-sur-Seine
♟️ Format: 9 rounds, Swiss system, 15 minutes per game plus 5 seconds increment from move one
👥 Teams: 4 players plus an optional substitute, representing companies based in Europe. A company may enter as many teams as it wishes.
🥂 Closing ceremony and gala evening: Saturday 28 November, 19:30, Asnières City Hall

ECU Commissions' recognition expand worldwide..

A memorandum of coperation was signed between the Abu Dhabi Chess Academy in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and the ECU Education Commission of the European Chess Union, in the presence of H.E. Husain Al Khoori, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chess & Mind Games Club, and Mr Jesper Hall, Chairman of the ECU Education Commission.

The agreement aims to enhance cooperation between the two parties in exchanging expertise and technical personnel, and in organising tournaments and training camps for chess teachers and trainers in schools, with the aim of promoting chess in schools, training chess teachers, and benefiting from the experience of the European Chess Union in this field.

With the recent sponsorship agreements signed, ECU is almost doubling its budget for 2027 and launching an elite event, the European Chess Super League, with the participation of traditional clubs in Europe and beyond. The European Chess Super League is based on competitive criteria, as at least five clubs will qualify from the European Club Cup 2026 in Budva, Montenegro.

Invited by the Armenian Chess Federation, ECU President Zurab Azmaiprashvili paid a two-days visit to Tsaghkadzor. ECU President participated in the International Scientific Conference “Theory and Practice of Chess Education” and attended the last round and awarding ceremony of FIDE ISCF World Schools Team Championship 2026 - European Continental Stage. The event was attended also by the ECU Youth Director Mr. Ion Dobronauteanu.

ECU congratulates all the winners and participants as well Armenian Chess Federation and International School Chess Federation for the high level organisation.

FEDERATION FRIDAY | 🇵🇹 Portuguese Chess Federation (FPX)

Every Friday, we spotlight one of ECU's 54 member federations. This week, we turn to Portugal, where chess is growing with extraordinary momentum.

A RECORD TO CELEBRATE

The 2025/26 season has ended with a remarkable milestone: the Portuguese Chess Federation (FPX) now counts 6,870 registered players, an all-time record.

This surpasses the previous high of 6,657 members reached at the end of the 2023/24 season. After a dip to 6,478 during 2024/25, FPX did not simply recover. it bounced back stronger than ever, setting a new historical benchmark. With 6,870 members, FPX is now within reach of the symbolic milestone of 7,000 registered players. The momentum is clear, and the direction unmistakable.

HOSTING EUROPEAN CHESS IN 2027

Portugal's growing chess community will take center stage on the European calendar: FPX will host the European Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship 2026 from 4 to 9 of December. A prestigious event, and a fitting recognition for a federation that continues to raise its game.

On behalf of all 54 member federations and the entire ECU family congratulations, FPX! Your resilience, dedication, and growth are an inspiration to chess across Europe. 👏
