European Chess Union

The European Chess Union is an independent association which has the exclusive right to organise the European Chess Championships.

Members are the European national chess federations. The Objects for which the European Chess Union is established are:
(a) to safeguard and further the interest and development of chess within its jurisdiction (as established by the territory of its Members) as well as safeguarding and promoting the interests of its Members
(b) to represent the interests of its Members at FIDE and other internati

onal organisations;
(c) to foster a positive framework of friendship and collaboration and generate peaceful relationships between the European Chess Union and its Members within its said jurisdiction;
(d) to provide an organisation for the promotion and participation of chess in all related existing and future activities, tournaments and other competitions and seminars within its said jurisdiction;
(e) to disseminate useful and instructive articles and ideas with respect to chess education;
(f) to raise funds by means of membership subscriptions, fees for services or otherwise for all the purposes and its Objects in such amounts and in such manner as may be authorised by the General Assembly; and
(g) to do all such other lawful things as are helpful to the attainment of the above Objects.

✨European Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2026 and the European Fischer Random (Chess960) Chess Championship 2026 will take place from 4-9 December 2026 in Portimao, Portugal, marking the 100th anniversary of the Portuguese Chess Federation!

♟️The event will commence with the European Rapid Chess Championship 2026 scheduled to take place on 5-6 December. The Rapid competition will be played in 11 rounds, swiss system, with the time control of 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment.
♟️The European Blitz Chess Championship 2026 will be played on 7 December, in 13 rounds, swiss system, with the time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment.
♟️The European Fischer Random (Chess960) will take place on 8 December, and will be played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with the time control of 10 minutes + 5 seconds increment.

➡️The total prize fund of the events is €40.000.
📍The Championships will be held in Portimão Arena, Portimão, Portugal.
⏳The registration deadline is 5 November, 2026.

The Israeli Chess Federation organizes the Jerusalem Rapid Chess Open 2026 which will take place from 17-18 November in Jerusalem, Israel. 🏆

♟️The event will be played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with the time control of 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment.

➡️The tournament features the prize fund of €45.000, with €7.500 reserved for the Winner of the event! The Winner and the runner-up of the event will have the opportunity to compete in a 12-player closed rapid tournament from 23-26 November in Jerusalem which will feature the total prize fund of 250.000 USD.

European Senior Team Chess Championship 2026 reached its halfway mark following the completion of five rounds in Hersonissos, Crete, Greece! ♟️

In the 50+ section, the top seeded teams England 1 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Italy 🇮🇹 tie for the top, scoring 9 match points each, while Netherlands 🇳🇱 closely follows with the score of 8 match points.

The top seeds of the 65+ section are on the top of the leaderboard after five rounds, as Slovenia 🇸🇮 and England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 score 8 match points each to tie for the top, while Italy 🇮🇹 scores 7 match points.

The starts!

We are proud to officially announce the launch of the inaugural European Chess Superleague — a landmark competition that opens a new chapter in European club chess.

📅 February 2–10, 2027 | 📍 Bucharest

The Superleague will feature 8 elite teams, competing on 6 boards for a total prize fund of €300,000. This competition is set to become the most exciting club chess event in Europe and beyond.

European Senior Team Chess Championship 2026 commenced today in Hersonissos, Crete, Greece! 🏆

✨The Opening ceremony of the event took place shortly before the start of the first round with the attendance and speeches by the ECU Secretary General Mr. Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou, Greek Chess Federation board member Mr. Spyros Ilandzis, representative of the organizing committee Mr. Kostas Klokas, and Chief Arbiter of the event Mr. Kleon Ballas.

The 2026 European Senior Team Chess Championship 2026 starts tomorrow in Hersonissos, Crete, Greece! The event will be played from 27 August – 4 September at the ****Hotel Royal Belvedere Hersonissos. 🏆♟️

✨The event gathers 32 teams represented by 150 players competing in two age categories: 50+ and 65+. Each tournament will be played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with the classical time control, and each field includes legendary Grandmasters.

📊The top seeded teams in the Open 50+ section are: England 1 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, Italy 🇮🇹, and Slovakia 🇸🇰. The Open 65+ section starting list is headlined by Slovenia 🇸🇮, England 1 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Italy 🇮🇹.

European Chess Union opens a call of interest for the 16 FIDE Commissions’ for members who will be nominated by ECU and for the 7 ECU Commissions. The ECU Board accepted a generous donation of €30,000 from Mr. Evren Ucok, designated in its entirety to the support of senior chess activities in 2027.

In further support of senior-level chess across the continent, the Board approved a financial contribution of €10,000 to each of the following championships:
