The Institute of International Law is the oldest organisation in its field, and its publications and resolutions constitute an indispensable reference for research and practice in International Law.

We show here, for the first time, a documentary produced on the occasion of its 150th anniversary and we discuss it with an eminent panel of experts to reflect on the history of the Institute and the challenges of the future.

The documentary features contributions from, among others, Georges Abi-Saab, Lucius Caflisch, Hilary Charlesworth, Gilbert Guillaume, Rosalyn Higgins, Martti Koskenniemi, Xue Hanqin and Abdulqawi Yusuf.

DECLARATION OF THE INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL LAW ON THE PRESENT SITUATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST – Institut de Droit International On 19 November 2023, the Institute of International Law has adopted a Declaration on the present situation in the Middle East (from the 111 votes received, 98 were in favour, 4 against and 9 abstentions). DÉCLARATION DE L’INSTITUT DE DROIT INTERNATIONAL SUR LA SITUATION PRESENTE AU MOYEN ORIENT – Institut de Droit International Le 19 novembre 2023, l’Institut de Droit international a adopté une Déclaration sur la situation présente au Moyen-Orient (sur 111 votes reçus, 98 pour, 4 contre et 9 abstentions). Le texte de la déclaration se lit comme suit :

Congratulations to our members Hilary Charlesworth and Dire Tladi who have been elected to the International Court of Justice!

The Institute of International Law recalls that, in its Declaration of Angers for the 150th anniversary adopted on 2 September 2023, the Members of the Institute:

“Recognising our responsibility for promoting the advancement of international law and the attainment of a just and peaceful world, in which human rights and the environment are fully respected,

Reaffirm our commitment to contribute, in accordance with our Statutes, to the maintenance of international peace and security, the observance of international law, including the rules applicable in case of armed conflict, and the supremacy of the principles of justice and humanity, which must govern relations between peoples and individuals,

We solemnly call upon all States, peoples and international actors to contribute to the achievement of a just and peaceful world and to a development that must be sustainable, equitable for all, and respectful of nature, to intensify their co-operation to this end, and to work for the deepening of, and respect for, the principles and rules of international law, in order to ensure international peace, security, and justice among the peoples of the world.”

L’Institut de Droit international rappelle que, dans sa Déclaration d'Angers pour le 150ème anniversaire adoptée le 2 septembre 2023, les membres de l'Institut :

« Reconnaissant notre responsabilité pour favoriser le progrès du droit international et l’avènement d’un monde juste, pacifique et pleinement respectueux des droits de la personne humaine et de l’environnement,

Réaffirmons notre volonté de contribuer, conformément à nos Statuts, au maintien de la paix et de la sécurité internationales, à l’observation du droit international, y compris des règles applicables en cas de conflits armés et à la primauté des principes de justice et d’humanité qui doivent régir les relations entre peuples et êtres humains,

Appelons solennellement tous les États, peuples et autres acteurs internationaux à contribuer à l’avènement d’un monde juste et pacifique et d’un développement durable, équitable pour tous et respectueux de la nature, à intensifier leur coopération à cette fin et à œuvrer à l’approfondissement et au respect des principes et règles du droit international, en vue d’assurer la paix et la sécurité internationales et la justice entre les peuples du monde. »

150 Years of Work of the Institute of International Law During this year's International Law Week, the Institute of International Law will present the work of its 81st Session, in which the issues of piracy as well as precedents and jurisprudence were addressed, and a declaration reaffirming the fundamental principles was adopted.
