Drug use in armed groups is thought to be widespread, but what does the data actually show?

UNIDIR’s brief examines the indications of drug use during and after association with Boko Haram and other armed groups in the region, drawing on survey data collected in Nigeria and the wider Lake Chad Basin.

The findings challenge common assumptions: as former Boko Haram associates do not appear to use drugs at higher rates than the wider population, yet awareness of drug use across these conflict-affected communities remains widespread.

🔎 What’s next for the UN Programme of Action on small arms and light weapons?

Natalie Briggs and UNIDIR’s Hana Salama take stock of recent progress on illicit trade, and look at what still needs to be done. Their latest commentary tackles emerging challenges like the illicit 3D printing of fi****ms and links to gender-based violence and human rights violations, and outlines four key steps:

☢️ Nuclear weapons have been tested more than 2,000 times, at dozens of sites, over more than 70 years.

Communities near some of those sites are still living with the consequences, and the effects were not only local. Radioactive debris spread around the world, and traces can be found in soil, water and even polar ice.

🌐 How can women parliamentarians strengthen the universalization and effective implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT)?

Parliaments play a critical role in translating treaty commitments into national legislation and providing oversight, promoting greater transparency and accountability in arms transfer decisions and engaging with civil society.

During the Twelfth Conference of States Parties, UNIDIR joined a panel exploring how women parliamentarians can build political support for ATT accession and strengthen its implementation. The discussion emphasized the need to raise awareness of the ATT, particularly Article 7(4), among legislators, gender equality ministries, national statistical authorities, civil society organizations and survivor-led organizations to prevent gender-based violence.

To support this, UNIDIR presented a new video offering a clear and accessible introduction to how national officers implement Article 7(4).

Welcome to UNIDIR, Dr Bruno Martini! 👏

Bruno joins us as a Researcher in our Space Security Programme. He holds a PhD in Aerospace Sciences from the Universidade da Força Aérea (UNIFA), where he researched strategic and aerospace foresight, and previously worked with US Space Force Space Delta 13 and as a Visiting Scholar at George Washington University's Space Policy Institute.

An oceanographer by training, his research now spans space security and sustainability, strategic foresight, emerging technologies and non-proliferation.
