🟥 On 11 June, we had the honour to host a critical conference at the Université de Genève , opening a space for dialogue on a troubling trend: the deliberate targeting of health systems in armed conflicts.

Guest of honour Dr Ghassan Abu-Sittah delivered a rigorous analysis of this new warfare strategy, joined by distinguished panelists including Prof. Larissa Fast, Dr Maarten van der Heijden, and Avril Patterson.

Some of the critical reflections shared during the conference included:

🗨️ The loss of 1,500 health workers in Gaza is more than a human tragedy — it is the erasure of a generation of expertise, making future recovery of the health system nearly impossible in the short term.

🗨️ International law is clear, but impunity persists because states exploit legal loopholes and avoid accountability.

🗨️ Protecting healthcare is not just humanitarian — it is a collective responsibility. When healthcare is under attack, the consequences ripple far beyond the frontlines.

Organised by the Geneva Centre of Humanitarian Studies and the Faculté de médecine - UNIGE, the event, skillfully moderated by Prof. Karl Blanchet and Prof. vinh kim nguyen reaffirmed the vital role of academic institutions in research, documentation, and fostering critical dialogue to advance accountability.

Our Students’ Testimonial

“Learning directly from real life cases and a vast amount of humanitarian experts - some of whom are now my colleagues - while living in the centre of the humanitarian world, was the greatest opportunity for me. It allowed me to take that big jump into one of the greatest organisations in the humanitarian sector.” Jessica RAMIREZ MENDOZA, Data and Research Specialist at ICRC and CERAH Master of Advanced Study (MAS) graduate 2017-18.

“ The course has helped me not only to acquire new skills, but also to increase my self-confidence as I can apply the tools in my workplace in a more qualified manner.” Lorena BRAZ, Resilience Programme Officer at WFP Kenya and 2016 student of CERAH’s Certificate of Advanced Studies: Designing Strategies & Projects for Humanitarian Action.

“The course grounded me with theoretical understanding and some practical lessons about humanitarian action. The subjects broadened my perspective with regard to the social and political issues happening within the international humanitarian system. I also learned about the moral dilemmas faced by every aid actor in various sectors when deployed in the field – based on first hand testimonies from my DAS colleagues, the CERAH mentors and outside speakers. They did not only impart knowledge and experience, but shared life lessons, realities, and potential solutions for future challenges.” Bridgit AU-GENER, student of CERAH’s Diploma of Advanced Studies in Humanitarian Action 2016.
