✨ Neva Maria Newcombe-Cook
I’ve had insomnia for most of my life. There are three million diagnoses in the US every year, so it’s pretty common— but mine has been consistent since I was a child. Normally there will be one night a week where I don’t sleep at all. It’s been very disruptive to my work and school life throughout the years, and I distinctly remember the first time it happened. I was 8, and I was just starting to be aware of current events, read the newspapers that my dad left out, that sort of thing. One day I read a headline about the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. I didn’t understand what that meant and I only had a vague notion of where Antarctica was, but for some reason I was gripped by fear. I imagined that the atmosphere would eventually “pop”, all the oxygen would be sucked into space, and everyone on earth would suffocate.
This (retrospectively) insane scenario scared me so much that I couldn’t even mention it to any adult who might assuage my anxieties. So, almost every night for the rest of 3rd grade, I would lie awake and watch the hours pass while I thought about the ozone hole. For a long time, I held out hope that the headlines I saw about global warming were all part of some elaborate prank, but eventually I realized that it was all true. Over time I became obsessed with climate change, especially because I grew up in a rural farming community, so nature and the seasons were my whole world. The thought of the earth breaking somehow—and millions dying because of it— haunted me throughout my childhood and still does. I still experience a lot of sleepless nights, but I found that the best way to soothe my anxiety about climate change is to learn as much as I can about it. The known is less frightening than the unknown, I guess. That’s why I decided to study environmental history, and that’s why I hope to work in natural disaster management one day. It’s fascinating and important work, but mostly it just helps me sleep at night.

* THEATER WORKSHOP ALERT *
This workshop is about playing. When we are kids, playing comes to us naturally. As we grow older, we get worried about studies, finances and life in general. Theater games allow us to explore a more intuitive side, that is free of judgement and connected with the present moment. Together, we will remember how it was like to follow your impulses and suddendly find yourself inside of a castle fighting a giant dragon, or searching for lost treasure in a dangerous deserted island.
Theater games also teach us important stage techniques, for example delivering a clear message, listening to your audience, feeling confident about your presence and entering the scene. It does not matter what brings you here, we will have fun for sure.
The meetings are of two and a half hours each with a small 10-minute break in between. It’s open for anyone with or without theater experience.
Where: L’Almacén 1201, Rue des Grottes 6, 1201 Genève
When: Every second wednesday starting the 5th of August from from 18:30 - 21:00h
It will cost you 5 CHF per workshop attended, or whatever you think is fair and can afford. If you are in a good position, feel free to give more.
A minimum of five people needed for the workshop to take place. Please let me know if you are planning to come, because of Covid it is important I plan ahead some things. The max is 15 people.
