🌍 Tracking Human Mobility through the Power of Data and Technology
This week at the Esri GIS for Good Seminar (28–29 October, Geneva), The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) is showcasing how geospatial technology helps map and understand human mobility worldwide.
DTM monitors movements of people affected by crises — from internally displaced persons and returnees to migrants on the move — transforming data into actionable insights for humanitarian response and recovery.
Developed in partnership with Esri and featured in the ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World, the DTM StoryMap highlights how data, people, and technology converge to tell the evolving story of global displacement.

Almost four years into the full-scale war in Ukraine, millions of displaced Ukrainians face a housing crisis. Many own homes they can’t safely return to—and those homes are often damaged. With rental options scarce and costly, for around 1.5 million internally displaced persons, securing adequate, affordable housing remains precarious.

🌍 The migration journey of Kyrgyz women
Labour migration from Central Asia is increasingly feminized, and Kyrgyzstan is no exception. Today, over half of Kyrgyz migrants abroad are women. Their journeys tell stories of resilience, empowerment, and courage but also of persistent barriers, stigma, and unequal opportunities.
🔎 In 2025, IOM, with support from the European Union (EU) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), conducted a large-scale study: “Gender aspects in migration and return: women’s experience in Kyrgyzstan”.
Drawing on IOM’s Mobility Tracking Matrix (MTM) data, Focus Group Discussions, and Key Informant Interviews, the study sheds light on:
• Women’s motivations to migrate from economic necessity to independence and safety.
• Challenges abroad, including limited legal protection and risks of exploitation.
• Reintegration struggles, from lack of recognition of skills to community stigma.
• Women’s resilience and their growing empowerment in Kyrgyz society
