On 10 August 2026, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck with its epicentre in San José del Palmar, Colombia.

In the days following the natural hazard, DTM conducted a damage assessment by integrating information from Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping and the Microsoft AI for Good Lab into a standardized geographic database of potentially affected buildings and estimated damage levels.

This work will support map production, area prioritization and rapid humanitarian response planning for the 186,182 people affected by the earthquake.

🔵More than half of returnees are unable to cover their basic needs
🔵While 60% of returnees are concentrated in Kunduz and Kabul provinces, one in three have moved at least once since returning, highlighting continued post-return mobility.

Most respondents returned as households, with 54% of assessed returnees under the age of 18, which significantly increases reintegration needs related to education, health and
protection.

Through data-driven programming and partnerships, IOM continues to support sustainable reintegration, promote durable solutions and strengthen resilience for returnees and host communities across Afghanistan.
