What if the people most affected by migration policies were placed at the center of the conversation?

We are pleased to invite you to the official launch of Inside the System: Migration, Fatherhood and the Cost of Silence, a new policy memoir by Muhammed Lamin Dibba.

Drawing on critical auto-ethnography, policy analysis, and lived experience, the book examines how administrative systems shape the lives of migrants and families, while raising important questions about procedural justice, fatherhood, and human dignity.

The event is inspired by the author's ongoing initiative, which sheds light on a powerful paradox: while migration governance is often discussed through statistics and procedures, the human beings behind these systems are too often overlooked.

Bringing together diplomats, academics, practitioners, and community leaders, this discussion seeks to explore how migration governance can become more responsive, more effective, and more human-centered.

What does meaningful protection for victims of human trafficking look like today?

The Global Migration Centre of the Geneva Graduate Institute invites you to a new edition of Migration Talks featuring Prof. Vladislava Stoyanova, Associate Professor of Public International Law at Lund University.

This lecture, From Rantsev to Today: The ECHR's Expanding Protection of Victims of Human Trafficking, explores how the European Court of Human Rights has transformed Article 4 of the European Convention on Human Rights into a powerful instrument for protecting victims of trafficking.

The discussion will trace key developments in the Court's jurisprudence, including important rulings on states' obligations to identify victims, support their recovery, prevent further harm, and provide access to compensation. It will also examine the opportunities and limitations of human rights law in combating trafficking and exploitation.

75 years on, the 1951 Refugee Convention remains a cornerstone of international refugee protection — but its future cannot be taken for granted.

In two recent contributions, Professor Vincent Chetail, Director of the Global Migration Centre at the Geneva Graduate Institute, reflects on the evolution of the international refugee regime and the challenges it faces today.

In an interview with Geneva Solutions, he examines the increasingly restrictive asylum environment confronting refugees worldwide, including deterrence measures, externalisation policies, and barriers to accessing international protection.

In his essay for Opinio Juris, Professor Chetail retraces the remarkable history of the Refugee Convention, from a treaty initially conceived to address post-war displacement in Europe to a universal pillar of international law that has protected millions of people over the past 75 years.

Together, these contributions highlight an important message: the Convention is not becoming obsolete. Rather, its principles are being tested by contemporary migration policies that risk undermining the right to seek asylum while maintaining the appearance of compliance with international obligations.

As we commemorate this landmark anniversary, Professor Chetail reminds us that refugee protection is not merely a policy choice—it is a legal and moral commitment rooted in international solidarity and human dignity.

75 years ago, the 1951 Refugee Convention was signed in Geneva, laying the foundation of the international refugee protection system. Today, as forced displacement reaches record levels, its principles are being tested like never before.

On 27 July, the Global Migration Centre is bringing together representatives from UNHCR, civil society, academia, and the diplomatic community to discuss the state of refugee protection 75 years after the Convention's adoption.

What has the Convention achieved? What challenges does it face in today's political environment? And what renewed commitments are needed to ensure protection for people fleeing persecution?
