At the 2026 WWEC Worldwide Educators Conference in Shanghai, the CIFAL Global Network took part in a dedicated Roundtable Discussion on “Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Holistic Education,” bringing together representatives from across the Network to exchange perspectives and experiences on the future of inclusive education.

The session was moderated by Mr. Wang Genxiang, Chairperson of CIFAL Shanghai, with contributions from:
- Ambassador. Sungchul Shin, Director of CIFAL Jeju
- Ms. Michelle Palumbarit, Director of CIFAL Philippines
- Ms. Akiko Ito, Executive Director of CIFAL Japan,
- Ms. Adriana López Mendoza, Global Coordinator of the CIFAL Global Network, UNITAR

The discussion highlighted the importance of making education more diverse, equitable and inclusive, while exploring how holistic approaches can help learners, institutions and communities respond to today’s interconnected challenges. Bringing together perspectives from different regions, the panel also reflected the strength of the CIFAL Global Network as a platform for international knowledge exchange and cooperation.

Connecting the conversation to the wider CIFAL community:

The Network was also present throughout the conference exhibition, with a dedicated CIFAL Global Network stand where participants could discover the work of the Network and its global community of CIFAL Centres.

Together, the panel and exhibition provided opportunities to share experiences, strengthen connections and showcase how the CIFAL Global Network contributes to capacity development, international cooperation and sustainable development through education.

Advancing Sustainable Education Through Global Exchange: WWEC 2026

The 2026 WWEC Worldwide Educators Conference concluded in Shanghai, China, bringing together educators, experts, policymakers, businesses and international partners for three days of dialogue and collaboration on the future of education and its contribution to sustainable development.

UNITAR, through the CIFAL Global Network, participated in the conference from 20–22 August, with CIFAL Shanghai serving as one of the key organisers of the 12th edition.


From Education to Sustainable Development:

The conference provided a platform to explore how education can contribute to the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with discussions spanning holistic education, AI, international and cross-border education, science, health, sustainability, lifelong learning and innovation.

During the opening ceremony, Alex Mejía, Director of the Division for People and Social Development at UNITAR and Head of the CIFAL Global Network, delivered a presentation on “Holistic Education in Sustainability for the Future” highlighting the role of education in driving sustainable development, institutional transformation and international cooperation.



Connecting The SDGs with Holistic Education:

Adriana López Mendoza, Global Coordinator of the CIFAL Global Network, contributed to a parallel session with a presentation on “United Nations Sustainable Development-Oriented Holistic Education” exploring how educational approaches can be aligned with the SDGs and support learners, institutions and communities in addressing interconnected global challenges.

The conference also brought together representatives from CIFAL Japan, CIFAL Jeju and CIFAL Philippines, reflecting the diversity of the CIFAL Global Network and its commitment to sharing knowledge and experiences across regions.

Through WWEC 2026, UNITAR and the CIFAL Global Network strengthened opportunities for international exchange and collaboration, while highlighting the importance of holistic, sustainability-oriented education in preparing institutions, communities and future generations for a more sustainable future.

The CIFAL Global Network Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting on International Education Cooperation took place on 21 August 2026 in Shanghai, bringing together UNITAR, CIFAL Centres from the region and academic partners to strengthen collaboration and explore new opportunities for international education across the Asia-Pacific region.

Hosted and organised by the East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) and CIFAL Shanghai, the meeting provided a platform for CIFAL Centres to exchange experiences, identify shared priorities and discuss concrete areas for joint action.



Building a Stronger Asia-Pacific Network:

The meeting opened with remarks from Prof. Wu Qiaofang, Director of the International Exchange Center and Dean of the International School of ECUPL, followed by contributions from Mr. Alex Mejía, Director of the Division for People and Social Development at UNITAR and Head of the CIFAL Global Network, and Mr. Wang Genxiang, Chairperson of CIFAL Shanghai.



From Regional Dialogue to Joint Action:

Ms. Adriana López Mendoza, Global Coordinator of the CIFAL Global Network, presented on the Network’s development and outlook, setting the stage for discussions on strengthening cooperation among CIFAL Centres and partners across the region.

Representatives from CIFAL Jeju, CIFAL Shanghai and CIFAL Japan, together with ECUPL, explored three key areas for joint action:

- Cross-border Study Tours & Youth Empowerment: developing joint study tours and student exchange opportunities.

- Curriculum Co-development & Resource Sharing: strengthening collaboration through guest lecturer exchanges, joint conferences and shared expertise.

- Joint UN Project Proposals: identifying opportunities for Centres to work together on initiatives aligned with UN priorities and sustainable development.



Connecting Institutions, Creating Opportunities:

The meeting highlighted the strength of the CIFAL Global Network as a platform for connecting institutions, sharing knowledge and translating international cooperation into practical opportunities for students, educators and communities.

The exchange concluded with a summary of key outcomes, followed by a group photo and campus tour at ECUPL, marking another step towards deeper regional cooperation in international education.
