This webinar aims to deepen participants’ understanding of sustainable development and its associated challenges, while strengthening the skills and competencies needed to take an active leadership role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

🌐 United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) invites participants to join the online blended training programme "Public Policy Foundations and Inclusive Practices (Winter Edition)" and explore what it takes to turn policy into impact.

The programme provides a comprehensive introduction to inclusive policymaking, covering every stage of the policy cycle, from identifying needs to evaluating results. Participants will examine how public policies affect different groups across society, including persons with disabilities, migrants, refugees, women, and other underrepresented communities, while addressing key issues such as digital inclusion, climate change, and food security.

CIFAL Honolulu invites students and professionals to join "Cyberinfrastructure Fundamentals: Supporting Resilience and Security in the Hawai'i-Pacific Region" a six-week online certificate course focused on digital skills and sustainability. 🌏💻

Participants will explore cyberinfrastructure fundamentals, the Pacific region and the Sustainable Development Goals. Through practical learning, they will discover relevant tools, learn how to access them, and explore how cyberinfrastructure results can inform decisions that support sustainable and resilient communities. No technical experience is required.
The course offers the opportunity to earn a certificate backed by the National Science Foundation and the United Nations, demonstrating skills in cyberinfrastructure and sustainability. 🎓

On 1 October, the United Nations marked the International Day of Older Persons under the theme "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives." As people around the world live longer than ever before, this year’s observance encourages societies to rethink how health, social, and economic systems can support healthy, productive, dignified, and equitable aging for all.

🌱 CIFAL York will host a Waste Audit Training Course designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical tools needed to conduct effective waste audits and transform waste data into actionable sustainability solutions.

Led by Dr. Calvin Lakhan of York University, the course introduces participants to the “Audit-in-a-Box” methodology, standardized audit protocols, and data modelling approaches for measuring and reducing waste streams. Participants will also gain insights from the Waste Wiki project and learn how waste data can support operational improvements and greenhouse gas reduction strategies.

This practical course is ideal for sustainability professionals, students, researchers, faculty members, waste management practitioners, and individuals interested in advancing environmental stewardship through evidence-based decision making.

🕊️ The United Nations House in Malaga hosted the ConectaSinViolencia Videopodcast Competition Award Ceremony, organized by CIFAL Málaga and the Malaga City Council in observance of the International Day of Non-Violence. The first prize was awarded to “Error404: Hate Not Found”, followed by “Anda sin luces” in second place and “Neurodivergences and Hate Speech” in third place, recognizing outstanding student contributions promoting non-violence and peaceful coexistence.

🎙️ The competition invited secondary school, high school, and vocational education students from Malaga to create videopodcasts of three to six minutes around the theme “Non-Violence: Actions, Stories and Lessons for Coexistence.” Participants could submit entries individually or in groups, using digital storytelling to share ideas, experiences, and proposals that foster dialogue, respect, and inclusion.

🌍 Through ConectaSinViolencia, young people were encouraged to transform digital communication into a tool for reflection, participation, and civic engagement. By providing a platform for youth voices, the initiative contributes to building a more respectful and inclusive society while advancing a culture of peace.

CIFAL Istanbul, in collaboration with the Sustainable Business Network, UNITAR and Bahçeşehir University, hosted the “Sustainability Communication and Sectoral Leadership on the COP31 Agenda” event on 17 September 2026, bringing together sector leaders, communication professionals, and sustainability experts to discuss the evolving role of sustainability communication ahead of COP31.

Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. Çisil Sohodol, Director of CIFAL Istanbul, and Semra Sevinç, Board Member of the Sustainability Academy and Co-Chair of the Sustainable Business Network. Expert insights from Dr. Aysun Şabanlı and Ahmet Akın explored trust, transparency, and emerging communication trends, while the Open Mic: Sustainability from the Perspective of Corporate Communication session encouraged dialogue and knowledge exchange among participants.

As COP31 approaches, the event underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration, trust-based communication, and knowledge exchange in advancing sustainable development.

This initiative reflects the mission of the CIFAL Global Network to strengthen capacities, foster partnerships, and promote sustainable development through dialogue, education, and action.
