Are they reading the words or just looking at the picture? 👀

Beginner readers are brilliant at using pictures for clues — but sometimes that means they’ll tell us what they see rather than read what’s actually written.

So every now and then, we make the picture deliberately wrong…

This simple little trick that tells us a lot about what’s really happening when they read.

This is just one of the ways we build real reading skills in our Reading & Writing 1 classes.

What you see: colourful classrooms, happy kids, crafts, stories and lots of fun.

What you don’t see: THIS. 😂

The unglamorous side of running CK…

Scrubbing. Painting. Fixing. Restocking. Endless garbage. Scratched floors. And coffee stains in places where coffee stains really shouldn’t be.

I probably care about the little details more than anyone will ever notice. Possibly a little too much. 😂 But I really do think they make a difference.

And I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve created. ❤️

👋 Since I’ve been showing my face around here a little more lately… here’s a bit about the person behind Custom Kids.

These two photos were taken 14 years apart — the year I started Custom Kids, and now.

Back then, my girls were still kids, I was teaching classes myself, and I had absolutely no idea what CK would eventually become.

So, a little about me…

🇨🇦 I’m Canadian — born and raised
🇨🇭 I came to Switzerland almost 26 years ago
👩‍👧‍👦 I’m the mom of three amazing adult children — including twins!
❤️ Married to Markus for 25 years
💍 And I have a soon-to-be son-in-law!
🌱 I started Custom Kids in 2012
👩‍🏫 When I started Custom Kids, I was teaching too — these days, I work mostly behind the scenes
📍 Somehow one little English school turned into two locations
🤹‍♀️ I do the website, social media, marketing, registrations, emails, admin, stock supplies…and about 700 other things 😂
💡 I’m constantly coming up with new ideas (probably too many!)
🧸 And now we take Zilla on family trips because apparently our school mascot is part of the family too 😂

14 years later, my kids are all grown up — and Custom Kids has grown up too. ✨
