SRWI Madagascar is a research project inside the ALICE Laboratory that investigates how disaster risk communication can be rethought as a situated, collective, and spatial infrastructure. It is currently being developed in Maroantsetra, a flood- and cyclone-prone region of northeastern Madagascar.

The project proposes the co-design of a Sensitive Risk Warning Infrastructure (SRWI): a hybrid, low-tech and off-grid assemblage that bridges traditional ecological knowledge and institutional warning systems, and emphasizes on inclusivity, intergenerational knowledge transfer, and community ownership.

Its modular design allows adaptation to other climate-vulnerable contexts, positioning risk communication as a spatial, cultural, and relational practice.

SRWI Madagascar is led by EPFL’s ALICE Lab in collaboration with Medair Madagascar, the CPGU (national disaster risk management authority), the University of Antananarivo, and local communities in Anbinanitelo, Ankofa, and Anjananzan.

ALICE YEAR 1 — ROOMS REVIEW
Design a room that engages the environnement, receives the living and generates public space.

First-year architecture students design a room in a public space departing from a timber joint as a protostructural fragment. Projects aim to reveal the site’s potentials and engage a dialogue between the body, public space, and the territory.

Architectures of Emergency
Sentinel Attentions and Relational Governance in a Rapidly Changing World

We are living in an age increasingly shaped by a continuous and constructed condition of emergency. Climate disruption, systemic inequality, forced displacement, and ecological degradation are not anomalies but interwoven dynamics that define the present. Emergency has become foundational—an organizing framework that governs how we perceive, inhabit, and respond to a changing world.

Architectures of Emergency examines how emergency is not only managed but actively constructed—with the complicity of architecture, urbanism, and design—as it is sensed, spatialized, and institutionalized across scales.

PARCOURS MENTA

Parcours Menta est un projet réalisé en étroite co-élaboration entre ALICE et l’équipe de recherche de Villes et Santé Mentale, un Living Lab porté par l’université de Neuchâtel et le CHUV visant à développer une ville plus favorable à la santé mentale et capable de promouvoir le rétablissement de personnes vivant avec un diagnostic de psychose.

L’équipe de recherche s’est associée au laboratoire ALICE pour développer une intervention portant sur les espaces verts comme lieux refuges ou ressources. Un processus contributif de trois workshops regroupant à parts égales des patient.e.s, des chercheur.euse.s et des architectes a abouti sur l’installation du Parcours Menta, un itinéraire sensoriel implanté dans le parc Mon Repos. Cette promenade en cinq étapes stimule chacun des cinq sens du corps humain – la vue, l’ouïe, l’odorat, le toucher et le goût – afin de multiplier des points d’accroche permettant de se ressourcer physiquement mais aussi mentalement dans l’espace vert. Le parcours, ouvert au public, a été expérimenté par les patient.e.s et practicien.ne.s du groupe de recherche entre juin et novembre 2025.

Dans le cadre du projet de recherche SURFACE, mené en collaboration avec le laboratoire CHANGE, ALICE a publié une enquête en ligne sur la plateforme Maptionnaire afin de collecter les expériences des habitant.e.s de la région de la Sarine. Racontez-nous vos pratiques spatiales et partagez l’enquête autours de vous !

SURFACE est un projet de recherche de 3 ans mené par les laboratoire ALICE et CHANGE, financé par une ENAC Fribourg Grant, et réalisé en collaboration avec le Service de la Mobilité de Fribourg et le Service d’Urbanisme et d’Architecture de la Ville de Fribourg. Son objectif est de créer une méthodologie de co-conception afin de développer la surface urbaine et routière en une interface socio-écologique. Ces processus permettraient de transformer les routes cantonales fribourgeoises en traversée de localité en Passages-Paysages multimodaux - des infrastructures vertes orientées vers la mobilité active.

Après un premier workshop ayant recueilli l’expertises des parties prenantes professionnelles, l’équipe de recherche souhaite maintenant collecter des informations sur les pratiques spatiales et expériences de mobilité des citoyen.ne.s. Elle s’intéresse à la manière dont la mobilité est vécue et considère l'expérience des personnes vivant ces lieux comme essentielle à la compréhension des enjeux qu'elle soulève.

ALICE a donc publié un Maptionnaire - un questionnaire sur une plateforme spécialisée en enquêtes géographiques qui permettra de récolter ces expériences. Le questionnaire est accessible sur le lien ci-dessous :

From the preceding phases, the language of an intersection of materials becomes a proto-element. During this phase, your architectures are negotiated, and affinities discovered between studios and projects. A set of 1:1 details as proto-elements are constructed, with the body’s energy implicit. A story about material, territory, and the body is told. Articulation is material.

ALICE est heureuse de présenter deux projets d’étudiant.e.x.s de première année dans le cadre de l’exposition collective Design(s) : Mobilité et Territoire montée par HiFlow. L’exposition questionne la vision et les préoccupations d’une jeune génération de designers, d’architectes et de créateur.ice.x.s suisses et européen.ne.x.s à travers un panorama de projets issus de l’ECAL, la HEAD ou l’EPFL qui abordent autant la pratique de la mobilité que l’appréhension innovante des territoires.

RESONANCE / PLANES
For nearly a decade now, ALICE Y1 pedagogy as always culminated at the end of the academic year in a construction workshop bringing over 200 actors together, stressing the collective nature of architecture – and of its teaching. The series of pictures taken a few weeks ago by Dylan Perrenoud convey the proposition to look at architecture as an -ing and not a thing. In May 2023, FOUNDATIONS were constructed that responded to the site and territory in parc Rigot and in the International Museum of the Red Cross and Red Crescent gardens. This year, the pedagogical program entered the second RESONANCE phase named PLANES. Taking into consideration how they have been used by communities in Geneva, students repaired, maintained, or unbuild these FOUNDATIONS in the process of developing PLANES. PLANES is part of ALICE’s research cycle through which we not only build, but learn, architecture.
