Sandec is the Department of Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Sciences and Technology (Eawag).

Sandec is an Eawag department working to develop innovative service solutions to water, sanitation and solid waste problems in low- and middle-income countries. Developing countries have pressing needs for clean water and sustainable sanitation and solid waste systems. Sandec develops innovative service solutions to water, sanitation and solid waste problems in low- and middle-income countries with its research expertise and local research partners.

The Sandec News 2026 is out! 🌍

The 2026 issue brings together contributions from all of Sandec’s groups:

Across these contributions, our researchers explore how to strengthen solid waste, water and sanitation services, build resilience, recover resources, improve urban sanitation, manage environmental risks and advance WASH education.

This year's edition looks back at 28 years of solid waste research for development and underlines Sandec’s commitment to solution-oriented research, global partnerships and open knowledge sharing, and to working collaboratively with partners to create lasting impact.

Recently we celebrated the opening of our new experimental laboratory facility, the LabCube.

The new lab enables more effective research on the black soldier fly. Its larvae have been studied as a low-tech solution for organic waste treatment and resource recovery in low- and middle-income contexts at Sandec-Eawag for almost 20 years. At that time, using the larvae of black soldier flies for organic waste disposal was a novel approach. Today, the team in the LabCube further develops practical, accessible, and circular solutions and explores how they can be applied in different contexts around the world.

A big thank you to Alexander Mathys at ETH Zürich for the continued collaboration over the past 10 years, and to Eawag for its ongoing support and commitment to advancing this topic.

We are looking forward to the next chapter of research, collaboration, and experimentation in these new facilities!

💪 Stay up to date on our cutting-edge water, sanitation, solid waste and humanitarian WASH research, as well as our education and training work, with our annual magazine, Sandec News.

Some of the highlights in Sandec News 2025 are:

Solid Waste Management (SWM) – An article about the Compendium of Solid Waste Management in Humanitarian Contexts.

Management of Excreta, Wastewater and Sludge (MEWS) – A report on molecular approaches to understanding greenhouse gas emissions in sanitation.

Strategic Environmental Sanitation Planning (SESP) – An article about recent developments in climate resilient WASH planning and financing.

Water Supply and Treatment (WST) – An analysis of a decade of rural water quality monitoring and management in Nepal.

Water Safety Management (WSM) – A report on water quality and child health status in The Gambia Central River Region.

Education and Training – An article about the co-creation of WASH and solid waste management capacities in Uganda.

The alum featured is Dr. Nida Maqbool, Associate Professor at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Pakistan. Additionally, Sandec's two new research leaders, Dr. George Wainaina and Dr. Karin Gallandat, introduce their research groups, Organisational Dynamics and Climate Adaptation (O&C) and Public Health, and Infrastructure, and Climate (PHIC).

New Face at ! Hady Elhashmy, MSC Civil Engineering student at the Technical University of Munich is doing his Master’s thesis in the Public Health, Infrastructure & Climate (PHIC) research group. The title of his thesis is “A comparative analysis of approaches to identify priority areas for investment in water and sanitation in cholera-affected countries”. It aims to reduce the burden of cholera through a geospatial analysis for planning water and sanitation interventions. Learn more about the group at: www.sandec.ch/phic.

💪 salutes the efforts of people, governments and organisations worldwide to support World Water Day! The 2026 theme of the annual United Nations observance day is: Water and Gender.

🌍The global water crisis affects everyone – but not equally. Despite progress, women and girls continue to bear a disproportionate burden of water and sanitation responsibilities, and remain underrepresented in water governance and leadership.

💧Celebrated on 22 March, the 2026 campaign, under the motto “Where water flows, equality grows”, highlights the need to empower women and girls in water management and decision-making to achieve SDG6 (water and sanitation for all).

New Face at ! Matheo Godenzi, MSc student in Environmental Engineering at EPFL, is will do his Master's thesis in the group and the Environmental Microbiology ( ) department. He will be modeling floods and micro-catchment hydrology to determine the role that open drains play in the spread of viruses in Kampala, Uganda. Learn more about MEWS research at: sandec.ch/mews.
