Sandec

Sandec is the Department of Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Sciences and Technology (Eawag).

Sandec is an Eawag department working to develop innovative service solutions to water, sanitation and solid waste problems in low- and middle-income countries. Developing countries have pressing needs for clean water and sustainable sanitation and solid waste systems. Sandec develops innovative service solutions to water, sanitation and solid waste problems in low- and middle-income countries with its research expertise and local research partners.

Some of the highlights in Sandec News 2025 are:

Solid Waste Management (SWM) – An article about the Compendium of Solid Waste Management in Humanitarian Contexts.

Management of Excreta, Wastewater and Sludge (MEWS) – A report on molecular approaches to understanding greenhouse gas emissions in sanitation.

Strategic Environmental Sanitation Planning (SESP) – An article about recent developments in climate resilient WASH planning and financing.

Water Supply and Treatment (WST) – An analysis of a decade of rural water quality monitoring and management in Nepal.

Water Safety Management (WSM) – A report on water quality and child health status in The Gambia Central River Region.

Education and Training – An article about the co-creation of WASH and solid waste management capacities in Uganda.

The alum featured is Dr. Nida Maqbool, Associate Professor at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Pakistan. Additionally, Sandec's two new research leaders, Dr. George Wainaina and Dr. Karin Gallandat, introduce their research groups, Organisational Dynamics and Climate Adaptation (O&C) and Public Health, and Infrastructure, and Climate (PHIC).

New Face at ! Hady Elhashmy, MSC Civil Engineering student at the Technical University of Munich is doing his Master’s thesis in the Public Health, Infrastructure & Climate (PHIC) research group. The title of his thesis is “A comparative analysis of approaches to identify priority areas for investment in water and sanitation in cholera-affected countries”. It aims to reduce the burden of cholera through a geospatial analysis for planning water and sanitation interventions. Learn more about the group at: www.sandec.ch/phic.

The “Introduction to Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage” online course has been updated! 🎉💡
Over 45,000 learners worldwide have already completed the course, developed by Eawag’s Sandec department. This MOOC teaches how to navigate water systems and technologies – from source to consumer – using evidence-based selections to ensure safe, resilient, and equitable water services for all.

🌍The global water crisis affects everyone – but not equally. Despite progress, women and girls continue to bear a disproportionate burden of water and sanitation responsibilities, and remain underrepresented in water governance and leadership.

💧Celebrated on 22 March, the 2026 campaign, under the motto “Where water flows, equality grows”, highlights the need to empower women and girls in water management and decision-making to achieve SDG6 (water and sanitation for all).

New Face at ! Matheo Godenzi, MSc student in Environmental Engineering at EPFL, is will do his Master's thesis in the group and the Environmental Microbiology ( ) department. He will be modeling floods and micro-catchment hydrology to determine the role that open drains play in the spread of viruses in Kampala, Uganda. Learn more about MEWS research at: sandec.ch/mews.

is delighted to announce that the project its alum Dr. Nida Maqbool participated in won the First Prize at the Venture Spark Business Plan Competition 2026, hosted by Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture, Multan! The project is “Innovative DEWATS for Wastewater Treatment and Reuse in Urban Sanitation”, and was selected among 600+ submitted business plans. It presents a low-energy, modular decentralised wastewater treatment solution designed for urban areas without sewer networks, encouraging safe wastewater reuse and sustainable sanitation. New Face at ! Yashoda Patil, MSc student in Chemical and Bioprocessing Engineering at the Hamburg University of Technology, is doing her Master’s thesis in the Water Supply & Treatment ( ) research group. She is investigating the effectiveness of the NextGen device. This device uses an electrolysis process on a saline solution, which turns it into chlorine, disinfecting water. She will also analyse the disinfection byproducts that result, to study if the water coming out of the Clara device meets the technical standards of safe drinking water.
