The tourism institute for education, further training and research in the tourism & leisure industry

Switzerland, a prominent tourist destination, celebrates not only political stability, high security, and breathtaking nature, but also excellence in education. Studying tourism in Switzerland just makes sense, especially at FHGR, which is located in the oldest city in Switzerland, Chur, in the middle of the Alps, where modern tourism was born. The programs utilize study techniques that dynamically connect theory and practice, preparing one for a career in management positions or as highly qualified product specialists, in the public and private sector. Small class sizes allow for individual supervision and interactive education. Problem-solving skills, innovation, and leadership are just a few of the characteristics taught, creating experts for international tourism in the following sectors: destinations, transportation, sports, hospitality, tour operating, and event & congress.

Meilenstein 📍

Halfway through the Tourism Summer School!🚀

Four weeks of intensive learning, teamwork, presentations, and new perspectives on tourism and we are already halfway through the first module block! 🙌

Our students are actively engaging with academic topics, developing their research skills, working with different methods, and presenting their ideas. 💡

The first weeks are all about building a strong foundation for academic study, from scientific writing and research methods to critical thinking and working with data. 📊

It is great to see how much energy, curiosity, and commitment they bring to the classroom. 🔋

Halfway there – and still so much to discover! 🔍

Our Master Tourism & Change students just got back from Zadar and what a field trip it was! 🚀

They met destination marketers, hoteliers, and the regional tourism office, with input from colleagues at the University of Zadar. A visit to Zaton Holiday Resort, one of the largest on the Adriatic, raised real questions about scale, ownership, and what mass tourism infrastructure looks like up close.

The highlight: a full day on a boat to the Kornati Islands with grilled fish on a small island surrounded by 100 mass tourists, followed by a debrief with Kornati National Park. ⛵⚓

Zadar itself added another layer: the Sea Organ, the Sun Salutation, the old town, and Fish & Jazz on the city walls.

Tourism is easy to analyse from a distance. Much messier when you're in it, which is exactly why the field trip is core to the programme.

🐐 Exploring Niche Tourism in Practice

During the block week beginning this month, students from the Niche Tourism course took part in an exciting field excursion. A local farmer from the Albula valley provided valuable insights into his daily work and shared his experiences in developing and operating the niche tourism product "goat trekking".

Of course, the goat trekking experience - the highlight of the visit - could not be missed. It offered students a firsthand look at how unique and authentic experiences can create value for visitors while supporting local businesses.

The excursion was both educational and enjoyable, giving students practical insights into niche tourism products and a deeper understanding of their role in today's tourism industry. 🐐🌿

🏒 Projektwoche in Zürich 🇨🇭

🌍✈️ Projektwoche in Malta
