Rome, pizza-making, gelato-making and some of the most famous sights in the world - this was one school trip our Middle Schoolers were very happy to pack for at the end of last academic year 🍕🇮🇹
Our ISCS students explored many of Rome’s most important sites, from the Colosseum and Ancient Rome to St Peter’s Square, museums, monuments and famous piazzas. They walked through centuries of history, discovered incredible art and culture, and had some very Italian lessons along the way: learning to make authentic pizza and gelato • Because making your own gelato in Rome is surely about as good as a school lesson gets. But yes, our history teacher Me Turner was there too, for the proper history...

Trips like this are such an important part of school life at ISCS.
Students learn by seeing, doing and experiencing things for themselves, while discovering a different culture and becoming more independent away from their usual routines. And doing all of that alongside their friends makes it even better.

🇬🇧 THE BRITISH MATURA AT ISCS: One curriculum, Swiss and Worldwide opportunities.

At ISCS, students follow the Cambridge pathway towards IGCSE and A Level qualifications, opening doors to universities in Switzerland, the UK, USA and around the world.

Our small classes mean we know our students well. They can choose subjects around their strengths, interests, university plans and future careers, with teachers able to give them the individual attention and support they need along the way.

German is an important part of that journey. Local German-speaking students can continue at an advanced academic level, while international students can progress from beginner through to C1 — combining a British education with the language skills needed for university and life in Switzerland, Germany or Austria.

And school is about much more than grades. Engineering, Computer Science, MUN, Musical, Drama, Art or Sport amongst others give students opportunities to explore their interests, build skills and develop the experience universities are looking for.

University preparation also starts long before the application itself. Our Careers Advisor works individually with students to understand their ambitions, identify university requirements and help them make the right choices now — from subjects and grades to extracurricular activities and experience.

All of this happens in the warm, family atmosphere that defines ISCS: small classes, teachers who genuinely know every student and a community where young people have the space and support to find their own path.

Our Primary students spent four days in Les Crosets, Valais, with the Swiss Alps becoming the setting for a very different kind of school week just before the 25/26 academic year ended🏔️

High ropes, navigation, hiking, archery and team challenges took them across the mountains, with each day bringing something new to master. Evenings had their own programme too, with sports, music, games and a disco.

A residential trip gives children responsibilities they simply do not have during an ordinary school day. They have to organise themselves, manage their belongings, follow a busy schedule, share space with others and work as a group — all while being away from home.

It also changes the dynamic between students. Different friendships form, children who might not usually work together become teammates, and teachers get to see sides of their students that do not always emerge during lessons.

At ISCS, Small school, big opportunities is about making experiences like this part of growing up at school — not something reserved for when students are older. 💙

Cambridge Primary Science is built around curiosity, investigation and learning by doing. Alongside scientific knowledge, students develop practical skills through the Cambridge Thinking and Working Scientifically strand: observing, questioning, investigating, experimenting and using evidence to explain what they discover.

Across ISCS Primary, our students have been putting exactly that into practice. ISCS Early Years and Year 1 explored the senses by investigating taste and smell and comparing different flavours and spices. ISCS Year 3 explored seeds and plant life cycles, examining how seeds develop and putting their learning into practice by planting parsley and marigolds. ISCS Year 4 investigated solids, liquids and gases: freezing and piercing a water balloon to explore the properties of solids, comparing how liquids flow, and making oobleck to discover a material that behaves like both a liquid and a solid. ISCS Year 5 investigated the properties of materials, first designing ways to stop an ice cube from melting and then building circuits to test which materials are electrical conductors and which are insulators. ISCS Year 6 turned to light, using prisms to investigate refraction and the colours that make up visible light, before changing the distance between a light source and an object to investigate how this affects the size of its shadow.

The real magic is that learning often does not feel like learning at all. It feels fun: curiosity takes over, one question leads to another and, without even thinking about it, children are making connections, challenging their own ideas and developing the critical-thinking skills that will stay with them far beyond Primary. At ISCS, we love watching our students get completely caught up in that process — the excitement when something works, the determination when it doesn’t and the endless questions that follow. For us, that joy matters: children who love learning become children who genuinely are excited to come to school.

At ISCS, academic excellence is about much more than one result. It is about knowing our students, understanding how they learn and giving each of them the support and challenge they need to achieve their very best.

Through the Cambridge International Curriculum, our students build strong academic foundations while developing critical thinking, problem-solving and independence. Together with the Global Mindset at the heart of ISCS, this gives them an education that reaches well beyond the classroom.

Assessment is an important part of that journey. It helps us understand what students have grasped, identify where more support may be needed and make informed decisions about what comes next. Progress is followed throughout the year, with our teachers, school leaders and Key Stage Coordinators working together so that no student gets lost in the crowd.

Our students have an important role too: asking questions, reflecting on feedback, developing strong study habits and learning to take ownership of their progress.

The goal is both academic and much bigger than academics: strong results, internationally recognised qualifications and university pathways around the world, alongside the independence, critical thinking and global perspective our students will carry with them long after they leave ISCS. 💙

So many nationalities (40 and counting) and a LOT of languages 🌍💙

On 26 September, we celebrated the European Day of Languages at ISCS, and our students were invited to wear their national colours 🇨🇭🇬🇧🇵🇱🇪🇸🇫🇷🇮🇹🇩🇪🇺🇸🇩🇰🇨🇮🇻🇪🇸🇪🇫🇷🇪🇸🇬🇲🇳🇱🇫🇮🇷🇸🇲🇨🇮🇪🇾🇪🇵🇾🇮🇸🇬🇹

Our gorgeous students really are the embodiment of our Global Mindset, and it was so much fun hearing just how many languages are spoken within our school community. There were plenty of moments of “wait, you speak that too?!” and lots of attempts at learning something new.

Multilingual is very much our normal at ISCS — but this was a lovely excuse to celebrate it. 🌍 Here are some photos of our Year 5 and how they celebrated the day!

Assessment Week is an important part of the academic journey at ISCS 📚💙 We know that every student learns differently. They have their own strengths, their own challenges and their own pace of progress, and assessment helps us understand that journey more clearly.

Alongside the formative assessment that is part of everyday learning, our students have a dedicated Assessment Week every semester. It is a chance to bring together what they have been learning, work independently and show what they understand.

The results give our teachers valuable information. They help us recognise strengths, identify areas that need more attention and make thoughtful decisions about the support or challenge each student needs next. Assessment Week also gives students experience of working under assessment conditions. With practice, reflection and feedback, they become more familiar with the process and learn more about themselves as learners.

By the time they reach their final IGCSE and A Level examinations, every assessment, every piece of feedback and every next step has contributed towards giving them the strongest possible chance of achieving their very best results — and taking those qualifications on to leading universities in Switzerland and around the world. 💙

At ISCS, we wish for every pupil to have as many opportunities as possible — in Switzerland and beyond. That is why German is a core subject at our school, not an extra.

For our youngest pupils, the journey begins in Early Years. They learn in a bilingual environment with two teachers, including one who communicates with them exclusively in German. Through lessons, play, conversations and everyday routines, both languages become a natural part of their school day.

As our pupils grow, their German lessons grow with them. The ISCS German programme is organised across four proficiency levels — Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Native — so our specialist German teachers can provide the right support and challenge. Pupils are assessed regularly and can move as their German develops.

We want our pupils to feel confident using German beyond the classroom. Lessons develop speaking, listening, reading and writing, while helping them communicate locally, understand Swiss culture and feel part of the wider community.

At ISCS, pupils can continue with German through IGCSE First or Second Language, A Level German and preparation for the official Goethe C1 examination. After-school German clubs provide additional opportunities to practise, while the C1 German Club supports older pupils working towards advanced certification.

Strong German can open important doors. It can support applications to universities in Switzerland, Germany and Austria and create further opportunities for future study, work and life across the German-speaking world.

At ISCS, German is a core subject, and we take it just as seriously as English and Mathematics. We want our students to feel at home in their local community, while strong German also keeps future opportunities open at universities in Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

Our German teaching team supports students across four ability groups—Native, Advanced, Intermediate and Beginner—with regular assessments allowing them to move groups as they progress. Our youngest pupils learn in a bilingual environment with two teachers, one teaching exclusively in German, so the language becomes a natural part of every school day.

This term, Frau Lehmeier’s Primary Native German groups are focusing on reading and discovering some much-loved children’s books:

We love seeing how much a good book brings into the classroom. As students follow the stories, discuss the characters and share their opinions, they build their vocabulary, strengthen their comprehension and learn to express their ideas clearly. Writing about each book then helps them organise their thoughts, use new language independently and become more confident and creative writers. Frau Lehmeier creates a warm, friendly and encouraging environment for our Native German readers. Children feel comfortable sharing their ideas, even when they are still searching for the right word, and it is easy to see how much they love learning with her.

We are so proud of our young readers. Seeing their German develop through books, conversations and their own writing is wonderful, but we are just as proud of the confidence and enthusiasm they bring to Frau Lehmeier’s classroom each day!
