Day 5, the final day of the MWT excursion, took us directly to the production of two multifamily housing projects in the Netherlands.

Starting at Ursem Modulaire Bouwsystemen, we learned about their modular construction process and their current project – The Waldorp Four, which will become the largest modular building in the Netherlands. We visited the production line of the modules and got to see the interior of a few completed units.

Next, we visited an active multifamily CLT construction site on Amsterdam’s Centraleiland, with the project’s structural engineer from CLT-S. On our site walk, we observed many of the acoustic and fire protection details and watched CLT panels being hoisted and fastened in real-time.

Now that the semester is finished, and summer break is here, we are continuing our MWT excursion series. Day 4 began at Lemahieu Group in Oostende, Belgium. During the visit we learned about their various treatment processes that create value added timber products such as Burnblock, ThermoWood, and Accoya. We then had a tour of their production facilities to see how these processes are carried out. The structural engineers among us were also impressed by the early glulam buildings!

For lunch, we tried the regional specialty: Shrimp Croquettes in the seaside town and then continued our journey onwards to Amsterdam for the evening.

Last week, we teased you with the ideas from our MPI/BBM students for Neue Holzbau—now, it’s time for the final presentations!

After a semester of ideation, refinement, and hard work, the final challenge was pitching business plans to n’H and our entrepreneurial experts. This meant:
🔹 Crafting an engaging story
🔹 Planning the finances
🔹 Running feasibility checks
🔹 Communicating complex ideas to non-wood experts
It was about stepping out of our engineer's comfort zone, thinking like entrepreneurs, and learning by doing. And yes, it was also about embracing failure, as some investigations revealed that the business plans weren’t profitable yet—a valuable lesson in itself!

Spring semester wrap-up! 🌸

This semester, our students tackled real-world challenges through a case study, applying their knowledge to large-scale projects.

For the MPI and BBM specializations, the focus was on Innovation Strategy in partnership with Neue Holzbau. The mission? Developing an innovative business leveraging n’H’s expertise and assets to expand their operations.

Phase 1: Ideation 💡
- Thinking big, interviewing experts (and networking along the way!), and using creative techniques to generate bold ideas.

Day 3 of the MWT excursion continued at Dovy Keukens, where we saw the cabinet production line and learned about all of the automation that has been implemented. Next, we visited Unilin where we learned about the company and its sustainability team. We finished the visit with a tour of the laminate flooring production and then spent the evening exploring the historic city of Brugge.

Day 2 of our MWT excursion began at Stabilame where we learned about the company and its business sectors. We saw the glulam production line and CLT production facility and learned about the various types of CLT panels they can produce, including nailed CLT and insulated panels. We also had the opportunity to go inside a modular school prototype.

Next, we visited Vandecasteele Houtimport , a leading wood importer and supplier in Europe that specializes in hardwoods. We walked through their vast stock of over 130 species, including some impressive woods from Africa and learned about their commitment to sourcing from certified forests.

It was another fun and informative day, thank you Stabilame and Vandecasteele!

The week of the 20th of April marked the implementation of the international module “International Applied Sustainability Week.”
Students from Bern University of Applied Sciences (CH), École Supérieure du Bois (FR) , and Ukrainian National Forestry University (UA) worked together on a case study focused on the assessment of biodiversity at "Mane de Chanouvre" in Nantes using the HIBOU method—an integrated approach developed by CSTB for evaluating nature-based solutions and their alternatives in urban areas.
Beyond the technical work, students also engaged in preparatory sessions and on-site activities focused on personal development, supported by the integration of the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) framework into the module. This integration was made possible through project funding from Movetia Switzerland.
As the project enters its final phase, it’s clear that the impact has been significant—especially in fostering collaboration among international students from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.

Our first stop on the MWT excursion was Fruytier Group in Marloie, Belgium. We toured the sawmill and saw the processes that transform logs into lumber. Then we visited their added value facility in Marche-en-Famenne, Belgium where we saw and learned about the glulam production line of StructureWood, their glulam division.

Together with , BFH MWT students spent the last week on an excursion through Belgium and The Netherlands visiting a variety of companies in the wood sector. From a sawmill, to a CLT building under construction, to automated kitchen manufacturing, we were able to connect our classroom learning to its real-world application and see the wood industry in action!

Starting in Liege and ending in Amsterdam, each day we explored new cities and enjoyed the food, drinks, and sights of the region.

A big thanks to TH Rosenheim for planning and organizing the excursion this year!
