Das professionelle astronomische Observatorium auf dem Gornergrat wird Schülern, Studenten, Besuchern des Standorts Gornergrat und einem breiten Publikum zur Verfügung stehen. Die verschiedenen Teleskope des Stellarium Gornergrat sollen via Webplattform von der Ferne aus bedient werden. Der Gornergrat ist dank seiner einzigartigen hochalpinen Lage auf 3135 Meter ü.M

Magical morning on the Gornergrat. In the middle you can see the Sun that is surrounded by a 22 degree halo. This phenomenon is created by refraction of random ice crystals in the air. In addition, we see two side suns (sometimes called sun dogs) to the left and right of the Sun. This even less frequent appearance occurs when horizontally floating ice plates hover in the right place between observer and the Sun and refract the light. Naturmagie auf dem Gornergrat. In der Mitte sieht man die Sonne, welche von einer 22 Grad Halo umrundet ist. Diese Erscheinung entsteht durch Lichtbrechung an zufällig orientieren Eiskristallen in der Luft. Zusätzlich sehen wir links und rechts von der Sonne zwei Nebensonnen. Diese noch seltenere Erscheinung entsteht, wenn waagerecht schwebende Eisplättchen am richtigen Ort zwischen Beobachter und Sonne stehen und das Licht brechen. Seit Wochen verbringen wir aufgrund von Corona die meiste Zeit daheim. Was tun mit den Kindern, die den Tag zuhause verbringen müssen? Der NFS PlanetS hat die Online-Plattform universe@home eingerichtet, die verschiedene spannende Aktivitäten und Lernmaterialien rund um das Thema Universum bietet. Für Kinder, Lehrpersonen und Weltraumbegeisterte jeden Alters. Manche Ressourcen sind von PlanetS selbst zur Verfügung gestellt, das übrige Angebot haben wir aus externen Plattformen ausgelesen. Das Angebot ist auf Deutsch, Französisch und Englisch verfügbar. Wir wünschen viel Spass und hoffen, dass ihr gut durch diese schwierige Zeit kommt!

The ESO council visited the Stellarium Gornergrat this spring. We were very happy and also a bit proud for the chance to show our facility to the important functionaries of the Stellarium's bigger brothers and sisters over in Chile! The weather however, did not really play along and we had to evacuate the summit without lunch just before a storm hit. The trip down to Zermatt was something to be remembered...

Asteroid 2012 TC4 imaged an hour ago by the Stellarium Gornergrat's 60cm-RiFast-Telescope. The asteroid nearly misses Earth tonight, as it passes in a distance of only ~ 44'000 km. This is indeed 9 times closer than the Moon! The speed of the asteroid is very high, about 14 km/s. In this image, you can see stars as round black objects, and the asteroid is the strip near the center. Exposure time was 90s in clear filter.

L'observatoire du Gornergrat permet d'amener les étoiles dans les écoles Le site du Gornegrat (VS) est avant tout connu pour sa vue imprenable sur le Cervin. Mais l'observatoire astronomique fournit aussi désormais du matériel pédagogique de qualité aux écoles.

Zu Gast beim Himmelsforscher Wünsch dir was: Oskar Diesbergen aus Spiez verbrachte die Nacht als Sterngucker auf dem Gornergrat im Wallis.

Last night at 10:07pm a group of about 15 people was observing the night sky with us at the Gornergrat. Suddenly, a very bright and slow going meteor was lighting up the sky. This fireball was a very spectacular sight (for the naked eye) and many reports came in today of sighings all over the country. Kudos to our colleague Stefano Sposetti in Locarno, who managed to get a nice image and a short movie of this fantastic event.

Between July 17th and August 24th, the Perseids, a meteor shower associated to the comet Swift-Tuttle can be observed. The shooting stars that seem to originate from the constellation Perseus are in fact very small particles that the comet left behind on his earlier visits to the inner solar system. This image from the Allsky camera shows one of these Perseids on July 13th at 4:03am.
The new housing for the constellation camera has been completed. Tomorrow, we will add the camera back to the telescope mount. We look forward to many beautiful images of the night sky.
