MUN Bern is a politically neutral student society at the University of Bern that enables students to participate and succeed in UN simulations worldwide.

What is Model United Nations? Model United Nations, or MUN for short, is an academic simulation of the United Nations, that aims to educate participants in the United Nations, international relations and diplomacy. Local as well as global conferences offer you the opportunity to make new friends and experiences. What is MUN Bern? MUN Bern is a politically neutral student society at the University of Bern. Since its foundation in 2008, MUN Bern has taken the key role of preparing students for UN Simulations with various workshops, guest speakers and lectures, enabling every delegate to succeed during international conferences. Furthermore, we are proud to offer an accredited seminar in cooperation with the University of Bern. We offer a Seminar (5 ECTS) for Major and Minor law students in cooperation with the Department of Public Law. Furthermore, MUN Bern gives students of all faculties the opportunity to participate in different MUNs around the world, amongst them are the famous and prestigious National Model United Nations in New York or the World Model United Nations organized by the Harvard University. Apart from having the chance to participate in various UN simulations around the world, MUN Bern also serves as a platform for students, who are interested in international relations, negotiations and world politics. MUN Bern offers its members various preparation workshops, lectures from supporting professors and speeches from guest speakers. Through the collaboration with JUNES (youth UN network Switzerland), members have the opportunity to participate in UN related events organized by JUNES or other Swiss universities. What does MUN Bern offer? MUN Bern is proud to offer a Seminar in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Künzli. In this seminar you will get an insight into the United Nations Organization. During 8 months, seminar participants receive coaching by experienced members of our association and professors of the University of Bern. Open for: Major and Minor students on both Bachelor and Masters level from the institute of Law and History of the University of Bern. ECTS: 5 Point
Evaluation: 50% 10 page written position paper, 50% oral presentation and participation at CapitalMUN
Important: Participation in the Capital MUN Conference is mandatory and your presence will be required at some of the scheduled events for the completion of the seminar. Our main events every year are among others:

- Kickoff Event (September 28, 2017) Get to know us and what MUN is all about and discover your opportunities! Meet us at HG120 at 18:15.

- Ice Breaking At this event we will get to know each other, have some fun and step out of our comfort zone.

- Lecture about the UN We will learn more about the history, structure and activities of the UN and Switzerland’s role in it.

- Rhetoric Workshop Being able to express yourself properly is important for every successful debate, therefore, Prof. Tschentscher will introduce the basics of good rhetorical skills.

- Conference Simulations I-IV During the semester, we will have several workshops and simulations where you will be provided with all essential skills and knowledge to succeed at MUN conferences.

- One Day Simulation This event will be an additional opportunity for participants to practice the gained skillset be- fore going to a MUN conference and to take away some pressure from our seminar partici- pants. Now that they have completed the written part of their examination, our seminar participants are busy preparing for CapitalMUN on 28 February 🏛️🌍 We are excited to see them show off their negotiation skills during the conference weekend and prove all that they have learned last semester 💬🤝🔥

✨ Enjoy this little throwback to Saturday two weeks ago! ✨

Our seminar participants had their first chance to show what they’ve been learning and practicing all semester at our Model United Nations one-day simulation. 🌍🕊️ Our delegates discussed atomic testing and reparations and negotiated like true diplomats! 🤝💼

Last week, we had our first seminar session with Prof. Dr. Felix Addor, who led us through an interactive workshop on how conflicts arise. Using this as a starting point, he introduced key theories of international negotiation, including concepts like the Zone of Possible Agreement (ZOPA) and the Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement (BATNA), which students will apply in their upcoming MUN sessions.

✨ Little recap of our Thursday evening session ✨

We kicked things off with a visit from the delegation, who introduced us to their association and shared some exciting opportunities with our participants. 🌍

Next, our board president Aram gave an insightful introduction to the workings of the United Nations, setting the stage for the seminar ahead. 🇺🇳

Finally, we were lucky to receive a special video message from our former member 🫶 She shared how her time with MUN Bern helped her land an internship at the United Nations in Geneva, along with tips on succeeding in MUN, building a career in international relations, and insights into her current work at the UN. 💼✨
