🫀 Bridging the Gender Gap in Cardiovascular Medicine – Join Us in Zurich!
1–2 July 2026, on site or online 🫀
❓ Did you know that women experience heart attacks just as often as men, but on average 10 years later? Yet, their outcomes are often worse due to underrepresentation in research, delayed diagnoses, and less aggressive treatment (the Yentl syndrome).
❗ Dive into the s*x- and gender-specific nuances of cardiovascular disease. Designed for clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals, this 2-day intensive course (or single-day option) will equip you with:
✅ S*x-specific pathophysiology (e.g., microvascular dysfunction, plaque erosion vs. rupture)
✅ Gender biases in diagnosis & treatment (e.g., non-obstructive CAD, Takotsubo syndrome, vasospasm)
✅ Pharmacodynamics in men vs. women (anticoagulants, antiarrhythmics, heart failure therapies)
✅ Critical gaps in cardiovascular research ("bikini medicine") and their clinical impact
✅ Non-invasive testing & imaging pitfalls (breast attenuation, exercise ECG differences)
✅ Heart failure, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death—why gender matters
Credits: 1 ECTS + 12 CME points Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Kardiologie
❗Why attend:
Cardiology has long been tailored to one s*x/gender, despite women and men experiencing heart disease differently. This module challenges the status quo with evidence-based insights to improve outcomes for all patients.

🌈 Module “Gender Diversity”, June 11/12 2026 in Zurich
📍 Join us on-site or online!
✨We’re thrilled to announce that our module is now SIWF-certified!
🤝In an open and appreciative atmosphere, we explore topics that are still far too unknown, helping to break down prejudices and ignorance.
Here’s what the module covers:
✅ Comprehensive introduction to the sociological, psychiatric, psychotherapeutic, and ethical dimensions of gender diversity.
✅ Reproductive health & family planning for trans and gender-diverse people in Switzerland.
✅ Gender-affirming plastic surgery: Latest options, developments, and firsthand experiences from a speaker’s journey before, during, and after surgery.
✅ Intersectionality and public health: Analyzing vulnerabilities, stigmatization, and access barriers. How do social structures impact health and well-being? And how can we break down these barriers?
✅ Personal stories: A powerful panel discussion with transgender individuals sharing their everyday lives, challenges, and hopes for society and healthcare.
✅ From symbolism to science: Critically examining the ‘gender unicorn,’ current research, and the quality of evidence. Where do we stand, and what gaps need filling?
✅ Hormonal therapies: A deep dive into their role in gender-affirming treatment.
✅ Open discussion: Reflecting on key takeaways, unanswered questions, and actionable steps toward a more inclusive society and healthcare system.

Save the dates: 23-24 June 2026, University Hospital Zurich, Frauenklinikstrasse 10. The 3rd SABV Symposium brings two days of the best current science on s*x as a biological variable to Zurich, and it is open to everyone working in or around biomedical research, clinical practice, drug development, and health policy.
Organized by Ivana Jaric (Institute of Laboratory Animal Science, UZH) together with the EU-SABV COST Action (CA24168), the program features 23 lectures by speakers from 14 countries. Topics span s*x differences in brain function and disease, pain, pharmacology of anticancer drugs, kidney and lung disease, mental health across the female lifespan, perimenopause, and endometriosis. Plenaries include Jeffrey Mogil (McGill) on pain, s*x and death, Tallie Z. Baram (UC Irvine) on stress, estrogen and the hippocampus, Michelle Roche (Galway) presenting the PAINDIFF recommendations for preclinical pain research, Natasha Karp (AstraZeneca) on barriers to s*x-inclusive preclinical research, and Brett McKinnon (Queensland) on endometriosis. Day two opens with the McKinsey Health Institute on the economic consequences of underinvestment in women's health.
Why this matters across disciplines:
Clinicians get the mechanistic and pharmacological basis for why standard protocols fail differently in women and men. Researchers get methodological tools to design studies that actually power for s*x. Industry gets the regulatory and translational picture from people working inside it. CAS in S*x- and Gender-Specific Medicine participants and alumni get a concentrated update on the evidence underlying the curriculum, from the groups generating it. The symposium is accredited as continuing education by the Federation of Swiss Cantonal Veterinary Officers (VSKT) for anyone running animal studies under Swiss TSchV.
Key deadlines:
Abstract submission closes Friday, 15 May 2026. Send a 250-word IMRaD abstract to [email protected]. Preliminary data are explicitly welcome. Two Novogene-sponsored poster prizes for s*x-differences omics work, €200 sequencing vouchers each.
Registration is open until 5 June 2026. CHF 129 for students, CHF 194 for postdocs and faculty, including lunches and the printed abstract book.
Full program and registration: https://sabvsymposium.org/
Bring your team. Send your students. Tell your clinical colleagues. This is the European meeting on SABV in 2026.

🚀 Designing Research Without S*x/Gender Bias
Module "Study Design and Research", 20/21 May in Bern, participation on site or online
❓ How often do we stop to ask: Is our research truly inclusive?
Data that ignore s*x and gender differences can miss critical insights, or worse, reinforce inequalities.
‼️ Let’s build research that reflects the real world ‼️
S*x and gender bias can creep into every phase of research, from design and sampling to data analysis and clinical recommendations. The result? Gaps in knowledge, skewed outcomes, and inequalities in health research and practice.
This module is here to change that!
✅ Identify, understand, and minimize s*x/gender bias in research design, data collection, and interpretation.
✅ Untangle the effects of biology (s*x) and social factors (gender) on health as BOTH matter!
✅ Work hands-on in workshops: Apply what you learn to your own research projects, with expert input and peer discussion.
