Since 1993, we have been nurturing young minds in the heart of Basel. Our Secondary School offers clear academic pathways up to the age of 16.

We offer a Primary & Secondary education based on the Cambridge curriculum & Lehrplan 21 at our Wildensteinerhof campus and a bilingual programme at our Kita / Early Years campus. ELABasel International School is a bilingual international school and Kita/Early Years provision, located in the heart of Basel, Switzerland, and established in 1993. We follow the Cambridge Curriculum and provide high-quality childcare and education for children from 3 months to 16 years of age, including Primary and Secondary education. ELABasel International School is an independent school with a strong parent partnership and is a proud member of Cambridge International Schools, the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), Swiss Group of International Schools (SGIS) and Kibesuisse. Our long-serving, fully qualified staff create a safe, secure and nurturing environment in which children thrive. 🎲 A fantastic evening of family fun with FELA! 🎲

A huge thank you to our wonderful parent council, FELA – Friends of ELABasel, for organising such a fun and successful Family Games Night yesterday! 💙

Various rooms and spaces around the school were transformed into game zones, with a fantastic variety of wholesome, traditional family board games to choose from. From classics to games for different ages, interests and abilities, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

It was wonderful to see children, parents and families coming together, playing, laughing and enjoying some quality time together away from screens. 🎲😊

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make it such a memorable evening! We’re already looking forward to the next one! ❤️

🏴‍☠️ Ahoy, me hearties! ⚓️

Year 1 had a fantastic pirate-themed day today, arriving in some amazing costumes and proudly showing off their incredible homemade pirate boats! 🚢

The children took turns explaining how they designed and built their boats while their classmates listened carefully. They also enjoyed plenty of pirate games before putting their creations to the ultimate test — would they float? 🌊

A huge well done to Year 1, and a big thank you to our families for helping create such wonderful boats! We’re so proud of you, little pirates! 🏴‍☠️

🌿🔬 Year 9 Investigate Basel’s Biodiversity! 🐟💧

Our Year 9 students took their Natur & Technik learning outdoors recently, exploring biodiversity and the growing ecological impact of non-native species along the Rhine and Birs rivers.

The students investigated how invasive species such as the leaf miner moth can affect Horse Chestnut trees and how Quagga mussels can disrupt native freshwater food webs. They also took a microscopic look at lichens, discovering how their unique partnership between fungi and algae allows them to survive in challenging environments – and how scientists use them as natural indicators of air quality. 🌱🔬

At the Birs River, the learning became truly hands-on! Students collected biological, chemical and physical data to assess water quality, including:
💧 Stream velocity
🧪 Nitrate, nitrite and pH levels
🌡️ Water temperature
🦠 Benthic bioindicators
🐟 And even a close-up look at local aquatic life with the safely caught “Frank” the fish!

They also explored Switzerland’s environmental regulations and how early-detection policies and restrictions on invasive species help protect native ecosystems. 🇨🇭🌍

With plenty of curiosity, teamwork and proper scientific investigation, Year 9 put their research skills into action. Next, they’ll analyse their findings and produce detailed water quality reports.

Well done, Year 9 – science really is everywhere around us! 👏🌿

🧪📜 From Medieval apothecaries to modern-day Basel! 💻

Year 6 have been exploring the fascinating History of Medicine, investigating the role of apothecaries in Medieval Europe. They examined a range of remedies from the time – including some rather unusual treatments! – and investigated whether any of the ingredients may actually have had genuine healing properties. 🌿🧪

With Basel having such a strong pharmaceutical and life sciences heritage, perhaps some of our future scientists and pharmacists were inspired by their medieval predecessors! 🏥🔬

To bring their learning to life, the children created their own Apothecary’s Guide to Medieval Treatments, recording their findings in the style of an old-fashioned document. 📜✍️

Meanwhile, in Computing, Year 6 have been developing their programming skills through Scratch, exploring how variables can store and change information to make their projects more interactive. 💻🚀

From medieval remedies to modern technology, Year 6 are discovering how science, medicine and innovation continue to evolve! 🔬✨

✍️ Writing for the Basler Eule!

Our Year 7 Advanced German students in the Secondary School are putting their language skills and creativity to the test as they begin preparing entries for Die Basler Eule, a long-running writing competition for young people from the Basel region.

This year’s theme is „Das Ziel ist gut, der Weg ist schlecht“ (The goal is good, the path is bad), with students able to submit a story, poem, play or report of up to 12,000 characters. The deadline for entries is 1st December 2026.

The competition provides an exciting opportunity for our Year 7 students to develop their own ideas and voices in German – and their preparation has already begun! 🦉✍️

Over the past six weeks, the class has also:
📖 Created imaginative stories inspired by their summer holidays
🪄 Tackled a wizardry-themed escape room exploring sentence structure and the four German cases
🧠 Created collaborative grammar mind maps
📍 Explored different types of adverbs, including Lokal-, Modal-, Temporal- and Kausaladverbien
🔤 Developed their spelling skills through work on noun and adjective suffixes
💡 Begun brainstorming ideas for their Basler Eule submissions

It has been a busy and creative start to the year for our Year 7 Secondary students – and we can't wait to see where their ideas take them!

Today, the whole school came together to say a very special farewell to Lisa Falcigno, our Finance & Business Manager, who retires today after a whopping 30 years of dedicated service to our school community. ❤️

Lisa absolutely did not want any fuss made of her retirement. And while we respected her wishes, we also knew we simply could not let this moment pass without expressing our deep gratitude for everything she has given to our school over the past three decades.

And so, our school community came together to give Lisa the send-off she truly deserved. 🥰

The whole school turned out to form a guard of honour as Lisa completed a very special lap of honour around our school Hof, while we sung the suitably titled Tina Turner classic, Simply the Best! 🎶

Lisa was aptly compared to the spine of a book — the part that holds all of its chapters together. It was a fitting comparison for someone who has been a constant presence throughout so many chapters of our school’s story over the past 30 years. 📖

Lisa, you have been such an important part of the fabric of our school, and you will be deeply missed by everyone at ELABasel.

🌿🎨🐯 A wonderful start to Reception! 🌟

Our Reception children have been settling in wonderfully to their new surroundings and getting to know their new teacher and classmates. 🏫❤️ It has been lovely to see their confidence grow as they begin this exciting next step in their learning journey. 🌱✨

This week, they have been exploring the colourful world of French artist Henri Rousseau 🇫🇷🎨. They took a close look at his famous painting ‘Tiger in a Tropical Storm’ 🐯🌧️🌿 and discussed the colours 🎨, shapes 🔺 and different details they could see.

The children also thought carefully about how the tiger might be feeling, coming up with some fantastic adjectives including scared 😨, cold 🥶 and shocked 😲.

Inspired by Rousseau’s work, they then had a go at creating their own rainforest pictures and paintings 🌴🦋🐍🌺. Their creativity and imaginations really came to life — and the results are fantastic! 🤩👏🎨

It’s wonderful to see our youngest Primary pupils settling so happily into Reception and discovering that the excitement of learning continues as they take their next steps beyond Early Years. 💚🌟📚

🚦 Year 2 Learn About Road Safety with Basel Stadt Police! 👮‍♀️

Last week, our first Year 2 class, 2AL, took part in the Verkehrsschule workshop with Basel Stadt Police. This week, it was the turn of our second Year 2 class, 2ED, to learn all about staying safe while walking around the city.

With Heidi from Basel Stadt Police, the children practised the important stop, look and listen routine when crossing roads and learned how to identify safe places to cross when there isn't a zebra crossing.

A special thank you once again to Heidi for continuing to visit ELABasel throughout the year and helping our students develop these invaluable skills — on foot now, and later when riding their bikes and scooters. ❤️

These are important skills that will help our children stay safe as they become more confident and independent navigating our city! 🚶‍♀️🚦

🤝💛 Buddy Time at ELABasel! 💛🤝

Our lovely Buddy Time initiative pairs a younger class with an older class, creating wonderful opportunities for friendship, connection and shared learning. 🥰📚✨

Last Friday, Year 1JS had a wonderful time making new friends with Year 6CD! 🎉👧🧒 It was fantastic to see the older children interacting so positively with their younger buddies, sharing books 📖, chatting 💬, laughing 😄 and enjoying time together. 🌟

We’re sure there will be plenty more fun, new friendships and special learning moments to come! 💕🌈🤗
