We conclude the series on the preparations for our graduation exhibition with Valeria Leiva, who is studying in our MA program.

“Using light and elements from the local landscape, my project Bodies of Time captures organic bodies on photosensitive paper. It reflects on the colonial narrative that separated humans from the living world, questioning the boundaries between nature and humans.

Since all bodies are organic, including our own, they are subject to the processes of time and decay. My project establishes a contemporary conversation with Anna Atkins, whose pioneering photographic work combined art and scientific observation in the 1840s. Atkins used the cyanotype process and sunlight to create detailed images of algae and other botanical specimens, becoming one of the first artists to use a light-based printing technique as a means of scientific documentation. Bodies of Time revisits this relationship between light, matter, and chemical processes, while shifting the focus from the classification of nature toward a reflection on our own material and temporal condition.”
— Valeria Leiva

What if we stopped constantly building new things—and instead began to rethink what already exists?

The Multispecies Spaces Lab continuing education program explores precisely this question and will take place next week at HGK Basel FHNW. The results will be on view at der TANK from 28 – 30 August with a breakfast presentation on Sat 29 August.

Multispecies Spaces Lab
Continuing education program
Led by Chrissie Muhr and Chus Martínez
With Céline Baumann, Justine Bell, Lucia Pietroiusti, Filipa Ramos, Yuri Tuma
Exhibition 28 – 30 August 2026
Breakfast presentation Sat 29 August 2026, 10 – 11 am
der TANK, Basel/Münchenstein

The Multispecies Spaces Lab is a seven-day intensive course at the intersection of architecture and art, where participants explore how spaces can be created that are intended not only for humans, but for many forms of life at the same time. Using new materials, collaborative methods, and a careful examination of what already exists, the lab experiments with a different way of building and inhabiting spaces. The results of these processes are on view in the exhibition at der TANK. It is part of the Kunsttage Basel (28 – 30 August 2026).

Next up in our series on the preparations for our graduation exhibition is Lea Pusch, who is studying in our BA programme.

“In my graduation project, I try to process themes of conservatism, escapism, and meritocracy in an experimental 10-minute opera. The video piece, encapsulated in a ceramic “opera house machine,” offers absurdism as a small relief to the ever-growing collective burden of image burnout, main character syndrome, living in and with an uterus body, pressure coming from one’s own little bubble, and much more.

I work exclusively within a multimedia space, as it allows me to express the multiplicity of conceptual processes, visions, and desires. Consistently combining analogue and digital media, I address my ambivalence and the tensions I experience as part of Gen Z, trying to keep up with the times while struggling to do so. ”
—Lea Pusch

We’re back with the second behind-the-scenes look at the preparations for our upcoming graduation exhibition. Here, Elia MenangSetiadi, who studies in our BA, is working on his graduation project in our artists’ studios.

“Run away from words and activate other senses. Move away from spoken language and find another one that speaks to me. But I like the feeling language and words can create. The sensation of them. In terms of sound, texture, noise, and melodies, this interplay of thoughts, head, brain, throat, mouth, and tongue has a stimulating drive. It’s driven, it’s static, it pauses, moves on, goes back, floats in every direction, flashes into different universes, and returns to the present. I am interested in this rhythm. It becomes a material I want to use.”
