How should methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus be classified and interpreted?

A new position statement developed jointly by the ISAC Staphylococcus aureus Working Group (ISAC-SAWG) and the ESCMID Study Group for Staphylococci and Staphylococcal Diseases (ESGS) proposes a standardised nomenclature for different mechanisms of methicillin resistance.

The statement aims to clarify existing terminology, improve the interpretation of susceptibility testing and support clearer communication in clinical practice and research.

🚨 New Epi Alert this week: updates on the Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak in the DRC, including two exported cases to Kenya and the Netherlands, and ongoing measles transmission worldwide. Other highlights include a surge in spotted fever group rickettsiosis in northern Mexico, with a case fatality rate exceeding 44%, and WHO's assessment of a fatal pneumonia case in a Russian laboratory worker, with no evidence of ongoing transmission.

Meanwhile, locally acquired dengue continues in Italy, with a new cluster identified in Rome, while Bangladesh faces a rapidly growing dengue outbreak.
