The World Orchid Iconography (WOI) is a service of the Swiss Orchid Foundation at the Herbarium Jany Renz. We scan orchid photographs of trustful orchideologists, herbarium sheets of important collections and scientific illustrations of historical books and folios. All image material (currently over 120.000 pictures) is provided free to the public as medium resolution pictures for scientific and o

ther purposes on our website: https://orchid.unibas.ch. High resolution pictures can be provided on demand. Just send us an E-Mail to our E-Mail-address: [email protected]. If you would like to publish the downloaded pictures, our policy is, that you must cite the original author (mentioned below the picture at the copyright symbol), mention the Swiss Orchid Foundation in the acknowledgments, and send us a free copy of your publication. How to cite a picture: author family name, initial of first name. (year of publication): title of picture. - URL (date of download). E.g.: Senghas, K. 458 orchid slides by Jany Renz from Iran, Italy, Switzerland and Germany were scanned during the last few weeks and are now newly available in the World Orchid Iconography (search for "Collector/Photo by: J. Renz", "Collection: Slides").

Thus, the digitization of the Renz slide collection has been completed.

A new orchid key for the genus Vanda has been created and is now online! Furthermore, the existing key for the genus Cypripedium has been adapted to the new security standarts of most browsers and changed to the same format as the Vanda key.

You can find both keys as well as the key for European orchids at https://orchid.unibas.ch/index.php/en/orchidinfos/orchid-keys.

Since January 2009, the European orchid species in the World Orchid Iconography may be accessed through an interactive key. We are happy to announce the relaunch of our website in a brand new design. During the last few months, we improved the layout of the website, structured the content more clearly and made the site more user-friendly. We also made sure that the website is technologically up-to-date and improved our database search function. We are very happy to announce the bestowal of the Swiss Orchid Research Award 2014 (SORA) to Prof. Cássio van den Berg for his work on the phylogeny of the genus Cattleya.

The SORA is a yearly award for scientific orchid research in the fields of evolutionary and reproductive biology, taxonomy, anatomy, physiology and ecology of orchids.

The Award will be hold:
Date: 9th of December, 2014, from 17.00 until 19.00,
Place: The Visitor's Green House in the Botanical Garden of the University of Basel (Schönbeinstrasse 6, 4056 Basel)
