Institute Digital Communication Environments HGK Basel FHNW Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE)
Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW They were outstanding models for a modernist design education.

The Basel School of Design and its students have influenced the international Graphic Design community since the 1960’s. Under the direction of Armin Hofmann and Emil Ruder courses for Graphic Design and Typography were developed. Since the year 2000, the Swiss educational system has undergone an astonishingly rapid process of adapting its educational institutions to the international standards of the Bachelor and Master curricula at the University level. In this process the Visual Communication department became a separate institute from the vocational level School of Design (Schule für Gestaltung Basel). We are now part of the University system of Northwest Switzerland and have developed a curriculum for the University level with international accreditation. This University level institute is officially called the «Visual Communication Institute/The Basel School of Design» and forms together with seven other Design- and Art oriented Institutes the Academy of Art and Design Basel (HGK Basel) as a Department of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). Today the Visual Communication Institute/The Basel School of Design offers a Bachelor's Degree programm, an international Master’s Degree program, international Summer Workshops, and is involved in many national and international research and development projects. We are proud of what our institute has achieved during the past few years. The institute has a curriculum for today and tomorrow’s design world continuing the rich tradition of Swiss Design and Typography.

MAS – Material as Subject
Material as Subject (MAS) asked what conditions are required for photorealism. Through inspection of three photorealistic technologies – digital photography, 3D rendering and AI image generation – MAS explores the impact of image media on image perception. The resulting installation creates an environment that should spark curiosity in the eye, allowing an observer to dissect the images on display. This is achieved through visual irritations in the subjects and the display technology.
The resulting work is an invitation to the eyes, aimed at familiarising a viewer with the complexity of visual perception and its hidden layers of information.

Mosaici di Palermo – Data Narratives between Tourism and Migration

Dithered Dreams – An Exploration of Low-Resolution Game Graphics

Out of Letterform, at Zurich Design Weeks
by Dongjun Choi .obj and Eunbee Lee .bee.lee

Dongjun Choi and Eunbee Lee took part in this year’s , presented as part of Zurich Design Weeks.

Out of Letterform began with a question: as graphic designers, how might we look beyond the letterforms we work with every day?

Rather than treating a character only as a fixed visual form, the project turns to stroke order and direction. By translating these strokes into directional symbols, the poster explores another way of seeing, constructing, and reading a character beyond its familiar outline.

CAROLIN WILDERER .design

The exhibition “Weltformat Graphic Design Festival: Tour de Suisse,” running from October 3 -10, 2026, features a selection of bachelor’s theses from the current academic year at Swiss design schools.

Among the awarded works is Carolin Wilderer’s project
“Where Are You Really From? A Study of Multicultural Identity”:

Where Are You Really From? explores how culture influences identity. The question “Where are you from?” can be difficult for people with multicultural backgrounds to answer, and this publication challenges the expectation of a simple response. There are three chapters, beginning with factual answers like birthplace and nationality, then exploring memory, and ending with how culture appears in the present day. These aspects of identity are pulled apart, translated into percentages and presented through an infographic system. Objective and subjective methods of analysis are used to reveal the limits of measuring culture. The visual system starts within a grid before gradually breaking out of it. Each chapter presents imagery differently, a mix between layering, black and white images and close-up documentation of objects. The publication shows the complexities of defining identity: it is layered, always changing and difficult to reduce to one clear answer.

VIVIENNE DEGEN

Hyper⏝Print, at Zurich Design Weeks
by Veronica Arancibia Daes, Jules Hoogkamer

Veronica Arancibia Daes and Jules Hoogkamer have been invited by to present their project Hyper⏝Print in the exhibition Out of Hand, part of Zurich Design Weeks.

Hyper⏝Print explores and expands the boundaries of printing machines by exploiting the limitations of their integrated processes. By reorienting mechanical printing as a visual medium rather than merely the final step in production, errors are incorporated into the design process.

The resulting Riso print is the outcome of extensive experiments with printing machines, formats, and the role of paper in the design process. This hybrid object, situated somewhere between a publication and a series of posters, documents the use of ink traps on a RISO drum.

Hyper⏝Print was developed as part of Veronica and Jules' Individual Project in the MA Digital Communication Environments at HGK Basel. Mentoring: Jiri Oplatek
